The Colton Steele rink, from Dartmouth, NS, won the $500 first prize in the Maritime Junior Fall Cash Fling, played over the weekend at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. The Steele rink narrowly defeated the hometown favourite Sam Ramsay rink 8-6.

The Erin Carmody rink, who are originally from Summerside, and now curl out of Charlottetown, and the Colton Steele foursome from the Dartmouth Curling Club, won the $500 top prizes in the Maritime Junior Fall Cash Fling, which wrapped this afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Other members of the Carmody rink are Geri-Lynn Ramsay, Jessica Van Ouwerkerk and Darcee Birch. Playing with Steele were Tony and Paul Weingartshofer, and Ben Creaser.

In the finals, Carmody beat the Brittani Jeans rink from the Gage Curling Club in Oromocto NB by a 6-4 score, while Steele recorded an 8-6 victory over Sam Ramsay, who is curling out of the Crapaud Community Curling Club. Other members of the Jeans rink are Leah Thompson, Samantha Robichaud, and Shelby Wilson, while Justin Richard, Eric Pidgeon, and Corey Miller round out the Ramsay squad. The Jeans and Ramsay rinks each go home with $250 for their second-place finishes.

In this morning’s junior women’s semi-finals, Jeans edged Mary Myketyn-Driscoll of the Dartmouth Curling Club 6-5 in one game, while Carmody beat defending champion Sarah Clow of Cornwall by an 8-5 score in the other.

In the junior men’s semis, Steele, trailing 9-6 after eight ends, recorded a deuce in the 9th, and stole the 10th end, and then the extra end to get by defending champion Steve Burgess of Fredericton NB by a 10-9 score. The Ramsay foursome scored a point in an extra end to edge out the Matthew Nabuurs team from Montague by a 7-6 score. 

Myketyn-Driscoll, Clow, Burgess, and Nabuurs each pocket $100 for making it to the semi-final round.

Round robin play wrapped up Saturday night. In the Junior women’s section, Jeans had a 5-0 win-loss record, and Carmody went 4-1 in one pool, while four teams finished at 3-2 in the other, with Clow and Myketyn-Driscoll advancing to the semi-final round. Emily Dwyer of Dartmouth and Lindsay Hughes of Charlottetown were the other teams at 3-2. In the junior men’s division, Steele went 5-0 while Nabuurs had a 4-1 record in one pool, while Ramsay also went 5-0, with Burgess finishing at 4-1 in the other.

24 teams, equally divided between junior men and women, took part in this annual cashspiel.

Many of the teams from this event will be participating in the Pizza Delight/Subway/Howard Johnston Junior Cashspiel, which gets underway Friday at the Cornwall Curling Club, with 20 teams entered. Results will be available at CornwallCurling.com and PEICurling.com.

The semi-finals get underway at 9 this morning in the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club’s annual Maritime Junior Fall Cash Fling. Defending champions Steve Burgess of Fredericton NB and Sarah Clow of Cornwall PEI have both advanced to the money round. 

In the junior women’s division, Brittani Jeans of the Gage Curling Club in Oromocto plays Mary Myketyn-Driscoll of the Dartmouth Curling Club in one game, while Summerside’s Erin Carmody, playing out of the Charlottetown Curling Club, takes on Cornwall’s Clow rink in the other semi.
