PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink are in Brantford Ontario this weekend, competing in the Sun Life Financial Invitational Curling Classic, billed as ”the premier cash spiel in Ontario”. Thirty two men’s teams and thirty women’s rinks, including many of the top teams from around the world, are competing for $97,000 in cash prizes. Glenn Howard and Cheryl Bernard are among of the headliners. The finals are on Monday.
Birt split her two Friday games, and is currently on the ice playing Alison Goring.
The Saturday draw times for the annual Pizza Delight/Subway/Howard Johnson Dutch Inn junior cashspiel at the Cornwall Curling Club have been delayed two hours due to the weather and road conditions. First draw goes at 10 am.
Friday night junior women’s winners were defending champion Erin Carmody, Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall, who won one and lost one, Anita Casey of Summerside, Nova Scotia Junior champ Marie Christianson, 2006 event winner Jaclyn Crandall of Fredericton, and former New Brunswick junior champion Mary Jane McGuire.
In the junior men’s division, defending champ Brett Gallant of Charlottetown lost his opener, 8-1 to Kendal Thompson of Halifax. Travis Colter of CFB Halifax has a 1-1 win-loss record, while teams at 1-0 are Thompson, Chris MacRae and Mark Vezina of Halifax, Matthew Nabuurs of Montague and Paul Dexter of Antigonish.
The event wraps up on Sunday.
