O’LEARY — Brett Gallant and his Charlottetown team will get to defend their Canadian junior men’s curling title next month in Sorel-Tracy, Que.
O’LEARY — A stolen triple in the fifth end proved to be Sarah Fullerton’s Cornwall rink’s ticket to the Canadian junior women’s curling championship.
The Sarah Fullerton foursome from the Cornwall Curling Club won their first Pepsi Provincial Junior Women’s Championship this evening at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary with a 9-2 victory over the Anita Casey team from the Charlottetown Curling Club. Fullerton, and her rink of Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young, with coach Brenda MacMillan, had won two of the three sections in the triple knockout draw, giving them the ability to take the Juniors title by winning either of the two championship round games, but only the first was needed. Fullerton, with hammer, scored a single in the first end. Casey blanked the second and took a single point in the third end. Fullerton pulled ahead with a deuce in the fourth, and built up a sizable lead with a stolen triple and single in the next two ends. Casey, and her rink of Abby Burgess, Hillary Thompson, and Jessica van Ouwerkerk, with coach Jeff Wilson, picked up a single point in the seventh, but shook hands after Fullerton recorded another deuce in the eighth end.
The winning Fullerton rink, who were the PEI Canada Games representatives in 2007, and won three of the last four provincial 17 and Under championships, will join the Brett Gallant foursome, who won their fifth consecutive Junior Men’s title earlier on Monday, at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec, where the Gallant rink will be looking to defend their Canadian title.

The Brett Gallant rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club, which includes third Adam Casey, second Anson Carmody, and lead stone Alex MacFadyen, with coaches Kathie and Peter Gallant, have won their fifth consecutive Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championship, with a 9-1 victory over the Matthew MacLean foursome from the host Maple Leaf curling club.
Gallant beat MacLean in the A, B and C finals of this triple-knockout event, making the two game championship round unnecessary.
In the C final, Gallant followed up a triple in the opening end by stealing a single in the second, and a deuce in the third. MacLean got on the board with a single in the fourth, but a Gallant triple in the fifth brought the game to a speedy conclusion.
Other members of the runner-up MacLean foursome are Marshall Smallman, Kevin Gallant, and Alan MacLean, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shannon Smallman.
The Gallant rink will now look to defend their Canadian title at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec. They were also silver-medallists at the World Juniors last season. Jamie Danbrook played lead on the Gallant team last year, but long-time lead MacFadyen returned to the Island and the team this season. Gallant, skipping a different team, also won the provincial title in 2004.
Meanwhile, Anita Casey and her Charlottetown Curling Club rink shaded Amanda MacLean from the host O’Leary club by a 5-4 score in the Junior Women’s C final. Casey now faces Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton rink in the two game championship round. Fullerton won both the A and B sections, and will take the title if she wins either game, while Casey would have to win both games. The championship games go at 6 pm and, if needed, Tuesday at 3 pm. Playing with Fullerton are Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young, with coach Brenda MacMillan, while Abby Burgess, Hillary Thompson, and Jessica van Ouwerkerk, with coach Jeff Wilson complete the Casey rink.
O’LEARY — The reigning boys 15 and under curling champion has a mammoth challenge on his hands. For the Matthew MacLean rink to win the P.E.I. Pepsi Junior (20 and Under) mens curling championship, he will have to beat the reigning Canadian junior men’s team three times.
Meanwhile, MacLean’s sister, Amanda MacLean, the reigning 15 and under girls champion, made sure there would be at least one play-off needed to decide the girls 20 and under championship.
After Sunday play in the triple-knockout Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary, the Brett Gallant rink are in the driver’s seat on their journey to their fifth consecutive junior men’s title, winning the B section, and advancing to the C finals. As they won the A section on Saturday, a win in any of their next three games – the C final, or the two championship round games, will give them another trip to the M&M Canadian Juniors, where they are the defending champions, and last year’s World silver medallists.
On Sunday, Gallant, and teammates Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Alex MacFadyen, with coaches Kathie and Peter Gallant, defeated the Matthew MacLean rink from the host club by a 9-2 score in the B final, scoring two four-enders in the process. The A final on Saturday was also against MacLean, with Gallant winning by an 11-2 score, aided by a six-ender. Gallant then recorded an 8-6 win over Charlottetown clubmate Spencer Pitre to advance to the C final, Monday at 1 pm against MacLean, who edged Maple Leaf clubmate Parker Clements by a 5-4 score to advance. Should Gallant win the C final, he will take the championship without the two game playoff round, scheduled for Monday at 6 pm, and Tuesday at 3 pm. Should MacLean win, he would also have to win both championship games, to take the title, while Gallant would repeat as champ if he won either.
In the Junior Women’s section, Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton rink won the B section, doubling Charlottetown’s Anita Casey rink 8-4, aided by a stolen ninth-end deuce. Fullerton, with teammates Michelle McQuaid, Sara MacRae, and Whitney Young, and coach Brenda MacMillan, had won the A final on Saturday, 6-5 over Amanda MacLean of the host Maple Leaf Club.
Fullerton did not advance to the C final, after suffering her first loss, by an 8-4 score, to MacLean, who will now face Casey in that game, Monday at 1 pm. Casey advanced with a 9-8 extra-end win over Tiffany Sweet of the Maple Leaf. The championship round games go Monday at 6 pm, and, if necessary, Tuesday at 3 pm.
Since Fullerton won two sections, she will play in both championship games against the C winner, and take her first Junior championship if she wins either.
The winning junior men’s and women’s rinks will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Championships, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec.
The second of the three section finals will be decided on Sunday at the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.
The Sarah Fullerton rink from Cornwall, who won the junior women’s A section, will play the Anita Casey foursome from the Charlottetown Curling Club at 10 am on Sunday, while the men’s A winner, four-time defending champion Brett Gallant, will again face Matthew MacLean from the host club, in the 1 pm Sunday B final.
In the B section playdowns, Gallant took a five-ender in his 10-2 victory over Sam Ramsay’s combined Charlottetown/Silver Fox team, while MacLean doubled Spencer Pitre and his Charlottetown rink by a 4- 2 score. Fullerton also recorded a 10-2 victory, over Tiffany Sweet of O’Leary. while Casey beat A section runner-up Amanda MacLean of the host club by a 6-3 score.
The C finals go Monday at 1 pm. If a team wins A, B, and C sections, they will win the juniors title without the two game championship round. If a team wins two sections, they will play in both championship games, and win the championship if they take either game. Otherwise, the B and C winners will square off, with the winner playing the A section winner in the final game. The championship round, if needed, goes Monday at 6 pm, and Tuesday at 3 pm.
The junior men’s and women’s champs will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Championships, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec.
The Brett Gallant rink from Charlottetown, and Cornwall’s Sarah Fullerton foursome have won their respective “A” section finals at the triple-knockout Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. This advances them to the two-game championship round. Should either team win all three sections, they would win their championship without the need for the playoff round. Should a team win two of the three sections, they would play in both championship games, and win the title should they take either game.
The Gallant team, who are reigning Canadian champions and World Silver Medallists, and are looking for their 5th straight PEI Juniors title, took six points in the eighth end in an 11-2 victory over Matthew MacLean of the host club, while MacLean’s sister Amanda lost a close 6-5 decision to Fullerton.
Other members of the Gallant rink are Adam Casey, Anson Carmody, and Alex MacFadyen, with coaches Kathie and Peter Gallant. Rounding out the Fullerton team are Michelle McQuaid, Sarah MacRae, and Whitney Young, with coach Brenda MacMillan.
Amanda MacLean takes on Anita Casey and her Charlottetown Curling Club rink, while Fullerton plays Tiffany Sweet of O’Leary at 4:3o pm, with the winners advancing to the B final, Sunday morning at 10.
At 8 tonight in the junior men’s section, Gallant plays Sam Ramsay and his combined Charlottetown/Silver Fox rink, while MacLean takes on Spencer Pitre and his Charlottetown Curling Club team. with the winners playing off in the B final Sunday at 1 pm.
The eventual winners will advance to the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Championships, January 16-24 in Sorel-Tracy Quebec.
