Canadian men and women both 3-0 at Olympics

(CTV) Kevin Martin and his Canadian team kept their record perfect intact Thursday morning with a 7-3 win over a lackluster Swedish squad that was almost decided in the first end. The Kevin Martin juggernaut can stretch its record to 4-0 with a Thursday night win over the French team in men’s curling. The game can be seen on Sportsnet beginning at 11 Atlantic.

In other men’s games, Great Britain skip David Murdoch missed a chance to win with last rock in the 10th end, sending the Swiss team in to a first-place tie with Canada and Murdoch back to the drawing board with a 1-2 record.

Meanwhile, it was déjà vu all over again for Canada’s Cheryl Bernard on Thursday. For the third straight game, Bernard needed her last shot to pull out the victory, this time a 6-5 extra end win over Andrea Schoepp of Germany.

Six teams unbeaten at Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Seniors Championships

Defending champion Shirley Berry from the Cornwall and Charlottetown curling clubs, and Karen MacDonald and her Charlottetown rink are undefeated after opening day play in the seven team women’s division at the Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Seniors Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Club. Berry, with teammates Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett, and Arleen Harris, and coach Butch McGee, won their opener against Nola Murphy of Summerside by a 7-4 score, and doubled Debbie Rhodenhizer of Cornwall 6-3. MacDonald, playing with Paula Creamer, Kay Atkinson, and Karen Hardy, had an opening round bye, and got by Karen Currie of Cornwall 8-6. This puts Berry and MacDonald in the 2 pm Friday A division final of this triple-knockout event.

In the eleven team men’s section, four teams remain undefeated, skipped by Clair Sweet of O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club, Dale Cannon of the Silver Fox, and Bill Hope and Peter MacDonald from Charlottetown. Sweet edged Grant Somers of Summerside 7-6 in an extra end in his only Thursday game. Somers beat Silver Fox clubmate and defending champion Mel Bernard 8-5 in his opener. Cannon also had only one game, beating George Koke of Montague 9-8. Hope, whose team includes six-time Seniors champ Ted MacFadyen, beat Charlottetown clubmates Charlie Wilkinson and Gordon MacDonald by 7-3 and 8-4 scores, respectively. Peter MacDonald, whose team includes his brother Rod, who has skipped Tankard winning teams four out of the last six years, and Peter Gallant, who won the other two years, along with Doug MacGregor at lead, beat Leo Stewart of Summerside 10-7, and Gil Jubainville of Charlottetown 10-4.

Sweet now plays Hope, while MacDonald takes on Cannon Friday at 9 am, with the winners advancing to the A final of this triple-knockout competition, set for Friday afternoon at 2.  Play continues Friday at 7, with Saturday draws at 9, 2, and 7. The B finals are in the last Saturday draw.  Sunday draws are also at 9, 2 and 7, with the two game championship round between the section winners scheduled for Monday at 9 am and 2 pm. If a team wins all three sections, the championship round will not be needed. If a team wins two sections, they will win the championship if they take either.

The winning men’s and women’s teams will advance to the Canadian Seniors, March 19-28 in Ottawa.

Four teams remain undefeated at Sylvan Learning 17 and Under

After opening day play, the Kyle Hughes and Tyler Smith rinks remain undefeated in the eight team junior men’s division of the triple-knockout Sylvan Learning Provincial age 17 and Under Curling Championships at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside.
Eleven year old Smith, from the Cornwall Curling Club, edged Shawn Pitre from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton by a 6-5 score, and stole two points in the final end to get by Alex Matters of Charlottetown 7-6. Hughes,  with a combined Montague/Charlottetown team, doubled Cody Dixon of Montague 6-3 in his opener, and stole an eighth end single to shade Cornwall’s Jeff Taylor foursome 7-6. Hughes and Smith will now face off in the A section final, Friday at 3 pm.

Other members of the Tyler Smith team are Parker and Noah O’Connor, and Tyson Smith, with coach Kevin Smith. Playing with Hughes are Tony Nabuurs, Taylor McInnis and Chandler Matheson, with coach Arnold Nabuurs.

In the eight team 17 and Under women’s section, the Veronica Smith rink from the Cornwall Curling Club, along with the Tiffany Sweet foursome from the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary won both their opening games, and a berth in the A division final of the triple knockout event. Smith beat Carolyn Rose of Montague 7-5, and Megan Davies of Charlottetown 7-3, while Sweet defeated Jenny McLean of the Silver Fox 7-3, and came from behind to score three points in the last end to edge Maple Leaf clubmate Amanda MacLean 6-5. Smith and Sweet now meet in the A final, Friday at 3.

Smith’s teammates include Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey, while Paul Smith and Sarah Fullerton share coaching duties. Chantal Clements, Kathleen and Laura O’Meara, and coaches Clair and Ralph Sweet round out the Sweet rink.

There are two junior women’s games Friday morning at 11, with Jenny McLean playing Cornwall’s Tricia Sanderson, and Carolyn Rose meeting Kimberly Dunbar of Charlottetown. These teams all have one loss. All six curling sheets will be in play in the 3 pm and 7 pm draws on Friday. Saturday draws are at 11 am and 3 pm, with the B finals at 11, while the C finals go Sunday at 11. The two game championship round between the section winners goes Sunday and Monday at 3 pm. This round will not be needed if the same team wins all three triple-knockout sections. If a team wins two sections, they will win the championship if they take either game.

The winning rinks will advance to the Atlantic 17 and Under Championships, April 2-4 at the Riverside Golf and Curling Club in Rothesay NB.
