PEI teams finish in 1st place and advance to 1 pm finals at Atlantic U18 Ch`ships

Round robin play wrapped up this morning at the Atlantic Under 18 Curling Championships at the Bluenose Curling Club in New Glasgow NS, with the PEI entries finishing 1st in both the women’s and men’s divisions and advancing to the 1 pm finals.

PEI’s Matthew MacLean rink from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary is still undefeated, at 4-0, in the men’s section, following a 5-4 win over Newfoundland and Labrador’s Stephen Trickett this morning, and will face 2nd place Daniel Prest and his Bridgewater NS team, who ended round robin play with a 3-1 record, in the final. Daniel Jessome from Chester NS (2-2) and Trickett (1-2) will play in the consolation final, with PEI native Kyle Hughes and his Saint John team not picking up a win, and finishing out of the playoffs. Other members of the MacLean foursome are  third Marshall Smallman, second Kevin Gallant, and lead Alan MacLean, with coach Glen MacLean.

The Veronica Smith team from the Cornwall Curling Club ended round robin play atop the women’s standings with a 3-1 record in the women’s division, following a 6-2 drubbing of the Krista Nix foursome from the host Bluenose club this morning. The Smith foursome includes third Katie Fullerton, second Sabrina Smith, and lead Chloe McCloskey, with coach Paul Smith.

Nix, Cathlia Ward from Fredericton, and Hayley McCabe from the Lakeshore curling club in Halifax all ended round robin play with 2-2. One of these teams will face Smith in the 1 pm final, while the other two will square off in the consolation game. The Sarah Hill team from St. John’s finished out of the playoffs at 1-3.

The Atlantic Under 18 championships feature the Atlantic provincial champions in the 18 and Under age category, plus a host team, in both men’s and women’s divisions, and is held annually, normally during Easter weekend, rotating between the four Atlantic provinces.
