Special Olympics Winter Games athletes, including curling gold medallists, honoured in PEI Legislature

Premier Robert Ghiz and Doug Currie, Minister of Health and Wellness and Minister responsible for sport, rose in the house this week to acknowledge the success (16 medals) of PEI’s Special Olympians  at The Winter Games in St. Albert, AB this February. Two PEI Special Olympic athletes who competed in St. Albert have qualified to represent Canada at World Games; Alyssa Chapman from Murray Harbour and Ellen McNearney from Montague will now spend a year in training to compete for Canada at World Games in PyeongChang, South Korea from January 29- February 5, 2013. The curling team, skipped by Greg St. John (back right), and coached by Dick St. John (front right) and Ann Doucette (front left), curl out of the Charlottetown and Cornwall clubs, and won a gold medal at the Games.
