PEI’s Newson rink pick up pair of wins Tues. at Canadian Mixed to improve to 2-2

It was a great day for the Jamie Newson rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Crapaud Community Curling Club Tuesday at the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in North Bay. Newson recovered from a pair of opening day losses with two high-scoring wins, to end the day with a 2-2 win-loss record.

Tuesday morning, the Island squad won 9-2 over Iqaluit’s Wade Kingdon. A terrific double takeout for five points in the fourth was the deciding factor. Nunavut remains winless at 0-3.

The afternoon draw saw Newson open with a triple and a single steal to lead 4-0 after two against Newfoundland and Labrador’s Gary Oke. Newson, whose team includes third Vanessa Hamming, second Andrew Robinson, and lead Michelle MacIntyre, picked up a triple in the 4th and a deuce in the sixth, while Oke picked up a deuce in end three and a single in end five. Final score: 9-3 for PEI.

The Newson rink play Saskatchewan’s Max Kirkpatrick at 10:30 AT on Wednesday morning, and take on Northern Ontario (Colin Koivula) at 7:30 pm. Going into the late draw on Tuesday, Kirkpatrick was atop the B pool with a  4-0 record,  while Koivula was 1-2.
