McInnis to compete in ninth national Scotties (Journal)

SUMMERSIDE – It’s been a long nine-year wait for Susan McInnis.

The lead for the Suzanne Birt rink admits she can’t wait to be back competing in the 2015 national Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Moose Jaw, Sask., from Feb. 14 to 22. The Birt rink, which curls out of the Charlottetown Curling Complex, punched its ticket to the Canadian women’s curling championship with a 10-4 win over clubmate Kathy O’Rourke at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside on Monday afternoon.

“I haven’t been there since 2006,” said McInnis, who confirmed she will be competing in her ninth national Scotties as a player. “I took a few years off, but I’m pretty excited to be back and have a chance to play again at that level. . .

“I went to my first one in ’89, so it’s been a long journey. I’ll officially hit four decades going to this one.”

McInnis is in her second season with the Birt rink. She first expressed an interest in returning to competitive curling after Leslie MacDougall retired following the 2012-13 season.

“I phoned her (Birt) and told her I was interested in getting the shoes back on,” said McInnis, who previously curled with Birt at the national Scotties in 2003, 2004 and 2006. “I was excited she took me back.”
