Four rinks still unbeaten after KFC U13 opening day, Noye, Mackay win A qualifiers in U18 ch’ship

The first day of play is over in the KFC Under 13 curling championships in Montague, and the Curl PEI Under 18 in Crapaud. Four of the 9 teams entered remain undefeated in the round robin U13 competition. The Mitchell Schut and Rachel MacLean teams from Cornwall are both 2-0, while the Katie Shaw team from Charlottetown and the Cruz Pineau rink from the Silver Fox are 1-0.

Schut won their opener 8-2 over Emily Sanderson from the host club, and then tripled the Jordan Dunphy-Condon foursome from the Fox 9-3 in draw two. MacLean stole three in the fifth end in a 7-2 win over Samuel Shaw from Montague, and shaded Cornwall clubmate Hayden Ford by a 4-3 score in draw two. Katie Shaw won her only game of the day by a 9-2 score over Ford.

The Cruz Pineau team from the Silver Fox, playing with three players, made an impressive debut in draw two, pulling out a 5-2 win over the Alexis Burris rink from Crapaud. Burris won her opener 8-2 over Dunphy-Condon and sits at 1-1 (win-loss).

U13 round robin play continues Saturday with draws at 1 and 4:30 pm, and wraps up Sunday morning at 10. The top two teams, based on a points system, in each of the two pools advances to the semi-finals at 1:30 pm Sunday.

Meanwhile, the men’s and women’s “A” section winners have been decided in the modified triple-knockout Under 18 event, with Leslie Noye from the Western Communuty Curling Club edging the Donald DeWolfe rink of Cornwall 5-4 in an extra end winning to win the men’s A qualifier, DeWolfe led 4-0 at the fourth end break, but Noye took singles in the next five ends for the win,

The women’s A section winner was Kaleigh Mackay and her Crapaud, Montague, and Charlottetown combined team. They were trailing Lauren Moerike of Charlottetown 3-2 after six ends, but scored a deuce in seven and stole a single in eight for the win.

The men’s B final, set for 2 pm Sunday, will see the winner of a 10 am Saturday game between DeWolfe and Summerside’s Alex MacFadyen take on Noye. MacFadyen lost his opener 6-5 to Noye, but won his second game 7-3 over Cornwall’s Devin Schut, who lost his opener 8-2 to DeWolfe.

Moerike, and Cornwall’s Lauren Lenentine square off in the women’s B semi-final at 10 am Saturday, with the winner facing Mackay at 2 pm. Lenentine lost her opener 8-4 to Mackay, but won her second game 7-4 over Alberton’s Emma Jean Griffin. Griffin lost her opener to Moerike by a 10-1 score.

The C finals go Sunday at 2, with the two game championship round, if needed, going Monday.
