Unbeaten Schut, MacLean square off Sun. morning at KFC U13 ch’ship, MacFadyen and Mackay rinks win U18 B sections

There will be no unbeaten teams remaining following the last round robin draw at 10 am on Sunday morning at the KFC Provincial Under 13 Curling Championships at the Montague Curling Club, as the two teams with perfect records, the Mitchell Schut and Rachel MacLean teams, both from the Cornwall Curling Club, will play each other. The top two teams in both pools, based on a points system, will then advance to the semi-finals, with 1st place in the A pool playing 2nd place in the B pool in one semi, and 1st place B taking on 2nd place A in the other. The winners then advance to the 5 pm finals.

As it sits now, Schut is first in the A pool with 51 points, followed by Alexis Burris of Crapaud with 27.5, Hayden Ford of Cornwall with 19, and Sam Shaw from Montague with 10. In the B pool MacLean has 31.5 points with 1 game left, Jordan Dunphy-Condon from Summerside has already finished round robin play with 24 points, while  Cruz Pineau, also from Summerside with 22 points, Charlottetown’s Katie Shaw with 17.5 points, and Emily Sanderson from Montague with 14 all  have one game remaining in round robin play.

The 10 am games see Schut take on MacLean, Burris face Sanderson, Ford play Pineau, and Sam Shaw battle Katie Shaw.

Meanwhile, at the Curl PEI Under 18 championships in Crapaud, the defending champion Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside have captured the men’s B section final in the modified triple knockout draw, beating the Leslie Noye foursome from the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton by a 7-3 score in the B final. Noye won the A final on Friday, beating Cornwall’s Donald DeWolfe team. The C semi-final goes Sunday at 10 am, with DeWolfe playing Noye. The winner then plays Alex MacFadyen in the C final at 2 pm. The section winners then advance to the championship round Monday at 10am and, if necessary, 2 pm.

The U18 women’s A and B finals were both won by the Kaleigh Mackay team from Crapaud, Montague, and Charlottetown, recently back from the Canada Games in Prince George BC. They won the B final today 8-4 over the Lauren Lenentine squad from Cornwall. The C semi-final at 10 am Sunday sees Lenentine play Lauren Moerike from Charlottetown, with the winner advancing to the 2 pm C final against Mackay.

The winners of the 3 modified triple knockout section finals then advance to the two game championship round Monday at 10am and, if necessary, 2 pm. If Mackay wins all three section finals, she will win the title, and the championship round will not be played. If either Lenentine or Moerike win the C final, they will take on Mackay in both section finals, but have to win both to take the title, while a Mackay win in either will give them the championship.

The winners and runners-up from the Under 18 men’s and women’s championships will advance to the Atlantic Under 18 Championships, April 3-5 in Montague.
