Season-ending Players’ Championship now underway in Toronto (Grand Slam)

TORONTO — Two-time Canadian champion Rachel Homan kicks off the Players’ Championship Tuesday night against Sweden’s Margaretha Sigfridsson in opening draw action.

Homan, from Ottawa, faces former teammate Alison Kreviazuk, who is filling in at second on Team Sigfridsson. Kreviazuk won back-to-back Scotties Tournament of Hearts titles with Homan in 2013 and 2014.

Elsewhere in Draw 1, Edmonton’s Val Sweeting meets Sherry Middaugh, of Coldwater, Ont. Sweeting, the reigning Masters champion, is at the top of the Rogers Grand Slam Cup leaderboard with 19 points.

Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland plays Winnipeg’s Kristy McDonald.

In men’s division action, Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen goes up against Sven Michel of Switzerland. McEwen has already won two Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling titles this season, taking the National and Syncrude Elite 10, as he aims to complete a career Grand Slam.

Calgary’s Kevin Koe takes on Brad Gushue, of St. John’s, N.L. Gushue also has claimed two Pinty’s Grand Slam titles in 2014-15, winning the Masters and Canadian Open, and is tied with McEwen atop of the standings in the chase for the men’s Rogers Grand Slam Cup.
