Birt finishes round-robin at 2-2, Casey goes 1-3, Gushue 3-1 in NL Grand Slam event (Journal)

PARADISE, N.L. – P.E.I.’s Suzanne Birt rink is right in the thick of things here at the Grand Slam of Curling’s Tour Challenge.

Suzanne Birt

Birt, third stone Robyn MacPhee, second stone Meaghan Hughes and lead Marie Christianson recorded a 7-5 come-from-behind win over Nina Roth of the United States on Friday to even their record at 2-2 (won-lost) in the women’s Tier 2 Division. That guarantees the Birt rink no worse than a tiebreaker.

The Adam Casey rink, also of P.E.I., dropped an 8-6 decision to Niklas Edin of Sweden to complete round-robin play in the men’s Tier 1 Division at 1-3.

Brett Gallant of Charlottetown is also curling in the Tour Challenge as the second stone with the Brad Gushue rink, which defeated Edin 9-5 on Friday to complete the round robin at 3-1 in the men’s Tier 1 Division.

Gushue will face Ontario’s Glenn Howard rink in a quarter-final on Saturday.
