One of the founders of the Cornwall Curling Club, Gordon Hermann, passed away early Monday morning. It has been said that without Gordon, there likely would have been no Cornwall Curling Club. Back in 1979, the Cornwall Village Council became interested in developing community recreation facilities. Gordon Hermann was the council member in charge of special community projects at that time. A survey was conducted with a skating rink, a swimming pool and a curling rink being the most popular items selected as being needed. When discussions were held with the Provincial Government, it was felt there were lots of skating rinks, and that the capital and operating expenses of a pool would not make it a viable operation. After the decision was made, Gordon sat on the committee that met weekly to plan and implement the project, and then moved on to sit on the charter Board of Directors for the Club. All Directors made a personal guarantee of $1000.
Gordon was Club president during the 1983-84 and 1988-89 seasons, and spoke at the Club’s 20th anniversary celebrations in the 2001-2002 season.

Gordon had heart surgery in June 2012, but recovered, and continued to curl at the Club until very recently, winning a medal in 65+ Mixed Curling at the 55+ games in February 2013. He has also curled at the Brier Canadian men’s championship, back when he curled at the Crapaud Curling Club on the Ted MacFadyen rink, in 1980.
