PEI (1-3) loses close game to N. Ontario, Alta. only unbeaten team at Canadian Mixed (Curling Canada)

Alberta remains the only undefeated team at the 2016 Canadian Mixed Curling Championships in Toronto.

Alberta’s Micky Lizmore, with his team of Sarah Wilkes, Brad Thiessen and Alison Kotylak, took to the ice to battle Newfoundland and Labrador’s Chris Ford in  p.m. AT draw. It was a homecoming of sorts, as both teams featured players born in Ontario and had several friends and family members in the audience.

After Ford scored a single in the second end, Lizmore took a total of three points over the next four ends to finish the game with a 6-1 victory in just six ends. Alberta continues to sit in first place in Pool A with a perfect 4-0 record while Newfoundland/Labrador drops to 1-3.

British Columbia’s Dean Joanisse forced an extra end in the 8 p.m. AT game versus Nova Scotia’s Doug MacKenzie with a perfectly executed hit and roll. In the ninth end, Joanisse played a tap-back that grabbed a piece of the button, but it wasn’t enough to stop MacKenzie’s tap to grab a bigger piece of the button for the 6-5 win.

Sheet B’s 8 p.m. AT game featured a New Brunswick versus Northwest Territories match-up. The teams traded points for the first six ends until N.B.’s Charlie Sullivan cracked a steal of two to end the game with a 7-3 final score. N.B. and N.W.T. both sit on top on the standings in Pool B with 3-1 records.

The Ontario and Yukon 8 p.m. AT match saw the teams trade single points and deuces throughout the game. After Yukon’s Bob Smallwood tied the game in the seventh with a single point, Mike McLean’s Ontario team needed to use the hammer to their advantage in the eighth end to secure a win.

But in the final end, McLean was wide on a runback attempt on his last rock and Yukon stole a single for the 7-6 victory. Both teams currently sit with a 2-2 record in Pool B.

Northern Ontario picked up their second win of the day after posting a 5-4 win over Newfoundland and Labrador during the 3:30 p.m. AT draw, then posting a 5-4 victory over P.E.I. ‘s Eddie MacKenzie during the 8 p.m. AT draw.

In other action Tuesday, the Yukon team won the third battle of the north with a 13-2 victory over Nunavut’s Ed Macdonald. On Sheet A, New Brunswick’s Sullivan was down 3-1 going into the eighth end and managed to score a three-ender to win 4-3 against Quebec’s Maxime Elmaleh. Meanwhile on Sheet E, Saskatchewan’s Bruce Korte posted a 7-2 victory over Nova Scotia’s Doug MacKenzie.
