Jackson hands Birt her 1st loss at PEI Scotties, and will meet Dolan in C final tonight

There will be a two team championship round on Monday at the PEI Scotties women’s championship in Montague. Lisa Jackson rink handed defending champion Suzanne Birt her first loss in the event this afternoon, and will advance to the “C” final at 7 this evening, against Kim Dolan. The winner of tonight’s match will then take on Birt on Monday.

As Birt won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, she will have a “double life” in the Monday championship round and will repeat as Scotties champ if she wins either the 10 am or the 3 pm game, while her opponent, the C final winner, would have to win both to take the title. Monday’s winner will advance to the national Scotties Tournament of Hearts. February 20-28, 2016 at Revolution Place, in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

Jackson blanked the first two ends in this afternoon’s contest and took a deuce in the 3rd. The teams traded singles to give Jackson a 3-1 lead over Birt at the 5th end break. Jackson then stole a triple in the sixth for a 6-1 advantage. Birt responded with a triple of her own to narrow the gap to two, but Jackson scored a deuce in the ninth, and ran Birt out of rocks in the final end for an 8-5 victory.

Kim Dolan will advance to her third section final tonight, against Jackson, after eliminating Shelly Bradley this afternoon with a 9-4 win. The game was tied at 3-all after 5, and Bradley pulled ahead with a stolen single in six. Dolan tied it with one in seven, and brought the game to an early conclusion with a steal of five points in the eighth. Final score: Dolan 9, Bradley 4.

The five team Future Scotties round robin developmental event wrapped up this afternoon, with the Alexis Burris team from Cornwall Curling Club, who had the bye this afternoon, finishing atop the standings with a 3-0 win-loss record. Other members of the Burris foursome are Sydney Howatt, Meghan Sherren, and Madelyn Cantwell, with coach A.J. Campbell. Katelyn Shaw from Charlottetown finished second, after the Emma Coffin team from Cornwall handed them their first loss, by a 12-7 score this afternoon.  Rachel MacLean from Cornwall beat Lauren Ferguson and her combined Western, Crapaud and Silver Fox team this afternoon, to finish with two losses, the same number as clubmate Coffin, while Ferguson did not manage to pick up a win in the event.
