The Sandy Hope rink defeated their Cornwall clubmates the Myrna Sanderson foursome by an 8-3 score this afternoon to win the women’s title, while the Ted MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside swept all three modified triple knockout sections to take the men’s championship, beating Charlottetown’s Craig Mackie foursome by a 7-4 score in the C final this afternoon, as the Curl PEI Provincial Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60+, wrapped up at the Crapaud Community Curling Club.

Hope finished double round robin play in first place with a 3-1 win-loss record, and had the bye this morning, while Sanderson beat defending champion skip Shirley Berry by an 8-3 score in the final round robin draw to finish in second place, with a 2-2 win-loss record in the three team all-Cornwall women’s event, and advance to the 2 pm final. Berry finished at 1-3.

Hope, whose third Shelley Ebbett and lead Arleen Harris were on last year’s winning rink, while her second, Debbie Rhodenhizer, was on last year’s runner-up team, gave up single steals in the first two ends of this afternoon’s final, but scored 4 points in the third end, stole a deuce in the fourth and a single in the 5th for a 7-2 lead. The teams traded singles in six and seven, to give Hope a comfortable 5 point lead coming home, and ran Sanderson out of rocks. Other members of the runner-up Sanderson rink are Myrna Craswell, Bernie Field and Carolyn Crockett. Sandy’s husband, Bill Hope, coached the winning rink.

In this afternoon’s Men’s “C” final, MacFadyen trailed Craig Mackie 3-2 after three ends, but pulled ahead with a deuce in the fourth. Mackie tied it in the fifth, but a single and a stolen deuce gave MacFadyen a 7-4 lead coming home, and he ran Mackie out of rocks for the win.

Because MacFadyen, who is skipping last year’s winning men’s team (replacing Mel Bernard), won all three sections of the modified triple knockout, Monday’s championship round was not required.

Other members of the MacFadyen rink are third Lou Nowlan, second Earle Proude, and lead Alan Montgomery. The runners-up in the competition were the Louis Walsh rink, also from the Silver Fox, who played in both the A and B finals. The team includes 3rd Doug Waugh, second Eldon Kilbride, and lead Carl Delaney.

Mackie edged Walsh 9-8 in an exciting back and forth extra end game this morning to punch his ticket to the C final. Mackie took an early 3-0 lead in this morning’s game after two ends, but Walsh fought back with a triple in end three and four points in the 5th to lead 7-5. Mackie scored 1 in six and stole a deuce in seven to regain the lead with an 8-7 score. Walsh forced an extra end with a tying single, but Mackie took one in the extra for the win.

MacFadyen’s 9-5 win this morning over Cornwall’s Paul Arsenault was also a see-saw battle, with MacFadyen scoring three points in the first two ends, but Arsenault pulling ahead with a pair of deuces to lead 4-3 at the fourth end break. MacFadyen took a deuce in five, with Arsenault recording a tying single in six.  MacFadyen took four points in the seventh to gain a big lead coming home, running Arsenault out of rocks.

Both the winning MacFadyen and the runner-up Walsh teams will advance to the 2016 Maritime Masters Curling Championships to be held at Thistle-St. Andrews Curling Club in Saint John NB, from March 11 to 13, 2016. The MacFadyen rink (or the Walsh team if they don’t choose to attend),  are also invited to participate in the 2016 Kings County Canadian Masters Championships, April 4-10 at the Glooscap Curling Club in Kentville NS and the Wolfville Curling Club.
