Curl PEI able to bring sport to more schools this winter (CBC PEI)

Curl PEI has received a new grant that will help bring the sport into more Island schools this winter.

The organization has been awarded $4,775 from the Canada Post Community Foundation, to be used to bring the Rocks & Rings curling program into elementary schools.

That program uses modified equipment that can be placed in the school gym, introducing children to the basic concepts of the sport.

“We know that a lot of kids don’t get in to the curling clubs, so we bring the equipment to them,” said Amy Duncan, the executive director of Curl PEI. “We introduce the program to them, the concept of the rocks and the rings, the sweeping and the yelling, the house and the button, and we let them learn in an environment that they’re already comfortable in.”

The program has been available to schools in the past, but at a cost of $225 a day.

Now the grant will cover that, for up to 30 schools across P.E.I.
