Veronica Smith rink advances to quarter-finals at Saint John cashspiel

sullivan800PEI’s Veronica Smith rink finished round robin play with a 3-1 win-loss record and has advanced to the 8:30 am quarter-final round of the WFG Jim Sullivan Curling Classic, which wraps up this afternoon at the Thistle-St. Andrews Curling Club in Saint John NB. The other PEI rink entered, the Tyler Harris men’s team, finished just out of the playoffs, with a 2-3 record. The semi-finals go at noon, with the women’s and men’s finals at 3.

The Smith rink, which includes third Jane DiCarlo, second Whitney Young, and lead stone Aleya Quilty, is playing the Christie Gamble rink of Halifax, with the winner facing Moncton’s Denise Nowlan in the semi-final round. The other quarter-final sees Shelly Graham of Fredericton battle Heidi Hanlon of Saint John, with the winner taking on Sylvie Robichaud of Moncton.  The women’s event has a total purse of $5000.

The quarter-finals in the $15,300 total purse men’s event have defending champ Jamie Murphy taking on Stuart Thompson, James Grattan playing Glen MacLeod, Mike Kennedy vs. Paul Dexter, and Quebec’s Jean-Michel Menard facing Wayne Tallon.
