The Phil Gorveatt rink from the host Charlottetown Curling Complex beat the Robert Campbell team from Charlottetown and the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Community Complex in Summerside 6-5 in an extra end to win the PEI Credit Unions Senior Men’s Championship this afternoon.

Gorveatt, who won two of the three modified triple knockout sections and would have taken the title with a win in either of two championship games,  this afternoon, and 10 am Monday, was leading 5-2 after six ends, but the Campbell foursome, who would to have won both championship round games, tied the game and forced an extra end with a triple and a stolen deuce. Gorveatt, with hammer, scored a single in the extra end for the win, and the Senior Men’s title.

Other members of the Gorveatt rink are third Kevin Champion, second Mike Dillon, and lead Mark Butler. Playing on the runner-up Campbell team were third John Likely, second stone Mark O’Rourke, and lead Rod MacDonald.

There’s still one game left to play, at 10 am Monday, in the Senior Women’s championship. This  afternoon, the Shirley Berry rink from the Cornwall Curling Club came out of the fourth end break of the 1st of two possible women’s championship games trailing Shelley Ebbett and her host club and Cornwall club team 5-0, and needing a win to force a deciding game, while Ebbett, who won two sections of the modified triple knockout draw, would have taken the title with a win in the game.

Berry then scored a triple in the fifth, and stole a single in end six, and a deuce in the seventh end to grab a one-point lead. Ebbett was kept to a single point in end eight, resulting in an extra end, with last rock advantage to Berry, who picked up a single point for a 7-6 win, and a chance to play again in the sudden-death final at 10 am Monday.

The Gorveatt rink and the winner of the women’s sudden-death final, will advance to the 2017 Everest Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, March 18-26 in Fredericton NB. The competition will be played at two facilities: the Capital Winter Club and Willie O’Ree Place, with the men’s and women’s finals both scheduled for the latter.
