UPEI Teams both finish round robin with 3-3 records at AUS Ch’ships. UPEI men advance to playoffs

Both the UPEI Men’s and Women’s teams had identical 3-3 win-loss records when round robin play wrapped up on Saturday at the Subway AUS Curling Championships at the Truro Curling Club, but only the UPEI Men, skipped by Chris Gallant, made the playoffs, finishing in fourth place, while the Women’s team, skipped by Sabrina Smith, ended up in fifth place, with only four teams advancing to the playoff round. The UPEI Women had the same record as the UNB squad, but lost to UNB  in their opening match.

The UPEI men will now play first place Memorial in the semi-finals at 9 am Sunday. UNB, which includes PEI native Alex Sutherland, and Dalhousie play in the other semi, with both winners advancing to the Gold Medal game at 1 pm, with the losers squaring off in Bronze medal game at the same time.

The women’s 9 am semis see 1st place St. FX, which includes PEI native Lauren MacFadyen, take on 4th place UNB, and DAL play Mt. A in the 2nd vs 3rd game. The winners play in the Gold Medal game, and the losers go to the Bronze medal game, both at 1 pm.

This year the top 3 teams for each gender (it’s normally two) will represent the AUS at the U Sports / Curling Canada University Championships, hosted by the Lakehead University Thunderwolves, March 18-22 at the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay Ont.
