Lenentine one win away from U18 repeat, DeWolfe vs MacFadyen in boy’s “C” qualifier

The defending provincial and Atlantic champion Lauren Lenentine rink from the Cornwall Curling Club remains undefeated at the provincial Under 18 Curling Championships at the Charlottetown Curling Complex, and could repeat as provincial champs as early as this afternoon. They have won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, both against their clubmates the Rachel MacLean team, and face them again at 1:30 in the “C” event final. If they win their third final, no championship round is needed. If MacLean wins this afternoon, they will have to beat Lenentine twice in the championship round at 9:30 and 1:30 Monday, while a win in either game would give Lenentine the title.

In this morning’s “C” semi-finals, Lenentine beat Cornwall clubmate Alexis Burris 6-2, while MacLean got by the host club’s Katie Shaw rink 9-6 to setup their third section final showdown.

In the boy’s “C” semi-final this morning, Parker MacFadyen and his team from the Silver Fox, Montague and Cornwall clubs scored five points in the 4th end on the way to doubling the A section winners, Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut rink, 8-4. MacFadyen now plays B section winner Donald DeWolfe and his Cornwall, Silver Fox, and Western team in the C final at 1:30. A win by MacFadyen would put him in the Monday championship round at 9:30 am against DeWolfe, with the winner facing Schut in the 1:30 pm final (the teams would be tied in number of section finals played in, so, according to the rules, the first qualifier, from the “A” section, would get the bye to the 2nd game). A win by DeWolfe would put him in both championship round games against Schut, with DeWolfe, as the winner of two sections, taking the title with a win in either game, while Schut would have to win both.

Five boy’s and six girl’s teams took part in this event, for curlers under age 18. The winners advance to the inaugural Canadian Under 18 Boys and Girls Curling Championship, operated by Curling Canada, April 18 to 22 at Curl Moncton and on arena ice at Moncton’s Superior Propane Centre.
