Dennis Watts beats Tyler MacKenzie to win PEI Mixed Curling Ch’ship (Team picture added)

The Dennis Watts rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton beat Charlottetown’s Tyler MacKenzie team 7-4 on Monday evening at the Cornwall Curling Club to win the PEI Mixed (Fours) Curling Championship and advance to the 2018 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, at the Swan River Curling Club in Manitoba, Nov. 12-18, 2017. A stolen deuce in the 5th gave Watts a 6-3 lead, and the teams traded singles in ends six and seven, with MacKenzie running out of rocks in the eighth end. Other members of the winning Watts team are third Jackie Reid and second Erik Brodersen from Charlottetown, along with lead Alison Griffin from Alberton.  Rounding out the runner-up MacKenzie foursome are third Aleya Quilty, second Doug MacGregor, and lead Jodi Murphy.

Watts qualified for the Monday championship round by winning the third and final qualifier game, the “C”,  on Sunday evening, beating “A” qualifier MacKenzie 7-4 in that game. MacKenzie beat Jamie Newson and this team from Charlottetown and the Silver Fox 6-2 to win the “A”, while Newson took the “B” with an 11-4 win over Watts.

The first game of the championship round saw Watts beat Newson 5-3 to advance to the final against MacKenzie. Defending champion Veronica Smith and her Charlottetown team went 1-4 in the nine-team event.

The PEI championship curling season wraps up this weekend with the KFC Under 13 at the Silver Fox in Summerside, and the Travelers Curling Club Championship at Western Community in Alberton, both starting on Friday morning, with live results available at PEICurling.com.
