Weekend wrapup: Ferguson wins CWG spiel jr. women’s division, Schut runner-up in CWG jr. men’s section, MacPhee goes 2-2 in Minnesota spiel

PEI teams preparing to compete in the 2019 Canada Winter Games were at Curl Moncton this weekend at the Centre for Curling Excellence Youth Spiel and Canada Games Mini-Development camp. The Lauren Ferguson rink from the Crapaud, Cornwall and Charlottetown clubs won their Canada Games women’s division final over Team Smith, after finishing round robin play with a 3-1 win-loss record and coming from behind to win their semi-final over Team Roy. The Sydney Howatt team were undefeated in round robin play and went on to win the Bronze medal game for third place overall, while their Cornwall clubmates the Rachel MacLean foursome finished 5th with a 4-2 record.

The Mitchell Schut junior men’s team from Cornwall finished their round robin with a perfect 3-0 record, and won their semi-final, but lost out in their CWG junior men’s division final to Team Boyle.

The Robyn MacPhee team from Charlottetown were competing in the Curl Mesabi Classic in Minnesota, finishing round robin play with a 2-2 win-loss record, and finished just out of the playoffs following a tight loss in the tiebreaker round. Alberta’s Kelsey Rocque beat Blaine Minnesota’s Nina Roth 7-2 in the final.

In the men’s section, the Saskatchewan rink skipped by PEI’s Adam Casey also finished with a 2-2 record.
