pepsilogo2015

Six junior women’s teams, from the Cornwall, Charlottetown, and Crapaud curling clubs. and four junior men’s teams, from the Cornwall, Charlottetown and Silver Fox clubs, will be competing in the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championships, December 27-30 at the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. Last year’s Junior Women’s champions, the Lauren Lenentine rink from Cornwall, are back looking to defend, but there will be a new Junior Men’s champion, as Tyler Smith, who skipped last season’s winning team, is representing New Brunswick this year on the Liam Marin team, while his third Brooks Roche is curling in the Nova Scotia junior provincials, also Dec. 27-30, on the Ryan Abraham rink. Last year’s PEI runners-up, the Devin Schut team are back, along with Devin’s younger brother Mitchell, both from Cornwall, plus the Chase MacMillan team from Charlottetown, and the Alex MacFadyen team from the Silver Fox in Summerside. Other competitors on the Junior Women’s side are the Annika Kelly foursome from Charlottetown, the Lauren Ferguson squad from Crapaud, Cornwall, and Charlottetown, and the Sydney Howatt, Rachel MacLean, and Emily Sanderson teams, all from Cornwall.

Teams will play a modified triple knockout format, where the winning team from each section also gets to compete in the next section. If a team wins all three sections, they will win the event without a championship round. If a team wins two sections, they will advance to a championship game against the winner of the other section and will take the championship if they win the game. If the other team wins, there will be a second championship game, with the winner of that game going to the nationals. If there are three separate section winners, the team that played in the most section finals will earn a bye to the second championship game where they will face the winner of a game between the other two finalists.

The winning Junior Men’s and  Women’s champions will advance to the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, Jan. 21 – 28 in Shawinigan Quebec.
