MacPhee, MacKenzie one win away from repeat Scotties, Tankard titles

The defending champion Robyn MacPhee and Eddie MacKenzie rinks from the Charlottetown Curling Club are both just one away from repeating as PEI Scotties women’s and Tankard men’s champions. They both captured their second modified triple knockout sections this evening, which means that a win in either of their two championship round games on Sunday at 2 and 7 pm will give them the repeat title, while their opponents, the Lauren Lenentine team from Cornwall and the John Likely rink from Cornwall and Charlottetown, who won one section each, would have to win both games to become champions.

MacPhee came from behind to beat last year’s runner-up, Veronica Smith from Cornwall, 8-5 in this evening’s women’s “C” final. MacPhee, playing with Sarah Fullerton, Meaghan Hughes, and Michelle McQuaid, had a 5-3 lead after eight ends, singles in nine and ten tied the game at 5, and a steal of three in the extra game MacPhee the win, and a “double life” in the championship round against “A” section winner Lenentine.

(L-R) Chris Gallant, Josh Barry, Eddie MacKenzie

On the Tankard men’s side, Eddie MacKenzie and his Charlottetown team of Josh Barry, Chris Gallant, and Sean Ledgerwood were ahead 3-1 after five ends in this evening’s “C” final against Cornwall and Charlottetown’s John Likely, who narrowed the gap to 1 point with a single in end seven. MacKenzie scored deuces in ends 8 and 9 to win the game with 7 -2 score. MacKenzie can now take the title with a win in either game Sunday against Likely, while Likely would have to win both.

The  PEI Scotties winning team advances to the national Scotties Tournament of  Hearts, January 27 to February 4 in Penticton BC, while the Tankard winner will play in the Tim Hortons Brier, March 3-11 in Regina SK.
