Defending champs among the four undefeated rinks after PEI Stick opening day

Six draws were played on Tuesday to open the PEI  2-person Stick Curling Championships, sponsored by Ferguson-Logan Montague Funeral home, at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. The defending champions — the Women’s Division duo of Ruth Stavert and Gloria Clarke from Cornwall, and the Open Division (any combination of male/female) pair of Walter Callaghan and John Vincent from the host club, remain unbeaten with a 2-0 win-loss records, along with Victor and Dianne Hogan from the host club, and, in the second Open Division pool, the team of Winston Keough and Harvey Holmes, also from the Western Community club, are 3-0.

Action resumes at 9 am Wednesday, this time with eight draws on the schedule, and wraps up on Thursday. Live scores are available at PEICurling.com

The 12 Open Division teams are divided into two pools, each playing a round robin, with the top three teams from each pool advancing to the playoff round. The four Women’s Division teams are playing a double round robin, with the second and third place teams advancing to a semi-final, with the winner facing the first place team in the final.

The top four Open division teams and top two women’s division duos advance to the Maritime Stick Curling Championships, in Chester, Nova Scotia from March 23-25, while the winners of the Open division also earn the right to participate in the 2018 Canadian Open Stick Curling Championship, April 2-5 at the St. Albert Curling Club in St. Albert Alberta.
