Curling starts Oct. 15 at Cornwall. Seniors Learn to Curl, Mixed Doubles, Online Registration are new this season

Curling starts Oct. 15

Icemaking has begun at the Cornwall Curling Club, with ice available for use on Monday, October 15, starting with their popular daytime “Drop In” curling from 10 am to noon Monday through Friday.

Free Learn to Curl Oct. 15, 16, 17

Also starting on Oct. 15 and continuing for three evenings will be their free, no-obligation adult Learn to Curl sessions. Curlers can come any one, two, or all three nights – there will be both new and continuing classes each evening. Wear loose or stretchy pants and a light jacket, and bring clean sneakers — everything else is provided. These evening sessions are for adult curlers, with younger curlers receiving instruction in our Junior Instructional Program, with a money back guarantee for juniors who try it but choose not to continue after a few weeks.

League Play – including new Mixed Doubles League, and new Seniors Learn to Curl

Evening league play begins Sunday Oct. 21st, with individual entry mixed curling, where new teams are made up every seven weeks, taking place Monday and Thursday evenings, semi-competitive team curling available in the Wednesday evening Ladder League, and competitive team curling league going Tuesday evenings.

Mixed Doubles

New on Sunday evenings from 6:30 to 8, and scheduled to start on Oct. 21 will be a league for the new Olympic sport of  Mixed Doubles curling. This is a team entry league, with teams made up of one male and one female player.

Commercial League

Cornwall’s Commercial League is a great way to get together with your co-workers (outside of work) or friends on a weekly basis. It runs Monday nights from 8:30-10:30. The curlers can change from week to week if you want, so you can rotate many curlers and handle work travel and vacations, too.

Seniors Learn to Curl

Also new this season, in conjunction with Curl PEI, will be a ten-week Seniors Learn to Curl Program on Tuesday afternoons from 12:30-2:30. This is planned to start on October 23. Although the primary target is seniors, any adult available on Tuesday afternoons is welcome. Fee is $100 for the 10 weeks.

Junior curling program

The Junior Instructional Program begins on Oct. 28, running on Sundays from 1-2 pm for Little Rockers (age 6-7), and 2-3 pm for Novice (age 8-12), as well as on Tuesdays from 5-6 pm for Novice. Juniors (13-20) who have completed the instructional program are invited to schedule team practices Monday to Friday after school.

Stick Curling

Cornwall is very active in the sport of Stick Curling, and has previously hosted and won the Canadian Championship. This season they’re hosting the Maritime and the Canadian Stick Championships/ Stick curling is a two-person sport, with similarities to Mixed Doubles, and can be played by anyone, including those with mobility challenges, as you use a delivery stick from a standing position instead of a traditional hack delivery. They have even had wheelchair curlers play in Stick events  – the facility is accessible right down to the ice level. Stick curling goes weekday afternoons except for Wednesday, from 12:30 to 2:30. Stick curlers are also welcome to participate in regular leagues and bonspiels.

Cornwall is pleased to announce that its new online registration system, implemented with help from Curl PEI, and using Curling Canada’s Curling.io system, is available now at CornwallCurling.com/registration. Instructions are provided on that page.

As well, they still have their traditional registration nights where you can register in person, with Board Members and Staff available to answer any questions you may have.
