Canada Games PEI Selection Finals Field Set

The field is set for the Canada Games PEI Selection Finals, December 16-18 at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The winners from that competition will advance to the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon, February 24-March 10  2007.

On Monday afternoon, the last of the eight finalists (four junior womens and four junior mens teams), was determined as the Selection Trials wrapped up at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Sarah Clow, from the Cornwall Curling Club, and her teammates Brielle Quilty, Whitney Young, and Christina Hennessey, with coach Jean Sinclair, defeated the Nikki Arsenault team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary by a 9-1 score.

Three of the junior women's teams are from the Cornwall Curling Club, with the fourth from the Charlottetown Curling Club, while the Silver Fox is the home club of three of the junior men's rinks, with the fourth rink from Charlottown.

The Selection Finals will see the junior men's and junior women's divisions each play a double round robin format.

Sunday, Nov 20 update: 
Only one spot remains to be decided in the PEI Canada Games Selection Trials at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club. The four junior men's and four junior women's teams qualifying from this event will compete in the Finals, December 16-18 at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, with the winners advancing to the Canada Winter Games in Whitehorse, Yukon, February 24-March 10  2007.
 
The final junior women's qualifier goes Monday at 3 PM. Due to a number of games being played back to back in the tight Sunday draw, it was decided to delay this match, which will see Nikki Arsenault from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary play Sarah Clow from Cornwall.

The 3rd junior women's qualifier went to Melissa Gaudet of the Charlottetown Curling Club, who defeated Jessica van Ouwerkerk 6-5 in the qualifying match. Other members of the Gaudet rink are Lindsay Hughes, Kimberly Gaudet, and Lisa Moerike.

Junior men's qualifier number three went to the rink of Sam Ramsay, Darcey Cousins, Eric Pidgeon, and Kyle Gillis, from the host Silver Fox club, who edged Matthew Nabuurs from Montague in the final game,by a 5-4 score.

The fourth and final junior men's qualifier was won by Neil Gallant from the Silver Fox, who shut out Isaac Shaw of Charlottetown 8-0 in the final. Justin Richard, Denis Richard, and Josh Richard round out the Gallant foursome.

Sarah Fullerton of Cornwall, and Corey Miller of Charlottetown were the second rinks to qualify for the Finals. On Sunday afternoon, Fullerton stole the final end to edge Nikki Arsenault of the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O'Leary by a 7-6 score. Other members of the Fullerton rink are Michelle McQuaid, Hillary Thompson, and Sara MacRae, with fifth Alyssa Mutch and coach Nancy Yeo. Earlier, the Cornwall rink edged Melissa Gaudet of Charlottetown and Jessica van Ouwerkerk of the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, both by 5-4 scores to advance to the B section final, after losing to eventual winner Erinn MacDougall in an A section semi-final game on Saturday.

In the Junior Men's B section, Miller doubled Charlottetown clubmate Isaac Shaw 6-3 in the final, after shutting out Matthew Nabuurs of Montague 7-0, and defeating Neil Gallant of the host club 9-6. Earlier, Miller lost his "A" semi-final to Shaw. Tyler Davies, Patrick Moore, and Joey Farquhar round out the Miller foursome.
 
Saturday Nov 10 update:
On Saturday, the Brett Gallant rink from the host Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, and the Erinn MacDougall rink from the Cornwall Curling Club were the first teams to qualify. Gallant, from Charlottetown, is curling with a Summerside team consisting of third Adam Casey, second Anson Carmody, and lead Alex MacFadyen. The rink went undefeated in the A section to grab the first qualifier, winning 7-1 over Isaac Shaw in the final, after wins over David Parker and Patrick Shepherd of Charlottetown, and Matthew Nabuurs of Montague.

Erinn MacDougall, with teammates Kayla Fraser, Jordan Fraser, and Jennifer Chaisson, defeated the Jessica van Ouwerkerk rink from the host club 7-4 in the A section final, after recording wins over clubmate Sarah Fullerton, and Katie Sharkey from the Charlottetown Curling Club,

The Canada Winter Games, to be held in Whitehorse, Yukon, February 24-March 10  2007 will be the first Canada Games ever to be held north of the 60th parallel and will mark the 40th anniversary of the Canada Games, which alternate every two years between Summer and Winter. PEI hosts the next summer event in 2009.
