Bill Hope and his Cornwall team won the Men’s title in the morning draw over Lou Nowlan, who has been on the winning team as skip or third for this event the last 10 times, and 15 times in total. Berry, then with Sandy Hope at third stone, previously won the women’s title in 2012, 2014, and 2015, while Hope skipped the winning team the last five years.

Berry, who won two of the three Modified Triple Knockout sections, needed to win one of the two Monday games to take the title, while Sandy Hope would have had to win both. Berry lost a close morning game by a 6-5 score, to bring the event to a deciding game.

A triple in the sixth end and a single steal in the eighth for Bill Hope and his Cornwall Curling Club team on Monday morning at the Montague Curling Club has ended Lou Nowlan’s 10-year winning streak (he’s won 15 times in total) at the PEI Masters Men’s Curling Championship, for curlers age 60 and over. Final score: 8-6, Nowlan had a 6-4 lead after 5 ends. Hope won two modified triple knockout sections at the championship taking place at the Montague Curling Club and only needed one win today, while Nowlan, who won the other section, would have needed to win both.

This year’s PEI Masters (age 60+) Monday Championship Round will feature the same teams as last year, but the finalist, not the winning, team from last year in both the men’s and women’s sections have the advantage going into the final day of play at the Montague Curling Club.

Cornwall’s Shirley Berry women’s team and Bill Hope men’s rink won the “C” Qualifiers Sunday afternoon, and have both won two of the three modified triple knockout sections, giving them a “double life” in the 9:30 am and 2 pm Monday Championship round, as a win in either game will give them the title, while their opponents, Sandy Hope from Cornwall and Lou Nowlan from the Silver Fox in Summerside , respectively, will have to win both games to repeat as Masters champions.
In Sunday morning “C” semi-final action, Bill Hope eliminated Cornwall clubmate Paul Arsenault with a 7-4 win after stealing a 7th end triple, Nowlan knocked out O’Leary’s Clair Sweet with a 9-7 extra-end victory, and Berry sent Bev Harding and her host club foursome to the sidelines with a 6-3 win.
The afternoon “C” finals saw Berry beat Sandy Hope 9-5, and Bill Hope defeat Nowlan 8-3, each with help from a four-ender.

The Bill Hope men’s rink and defending champion Sandy Hope women’s team rebounded from losses in the “A” qualifying games for the Monday Championship Round, to beat “A” Qualifier winners Lou Nowlan and Shirley Berry in the “B” Qualifier games Saturday afternoon at the PEI Masters Curling Championships, for curlers age 60 and over, being played at the Montague Curling Club. The Hope and Berry teams are from the Cornwall Curling Club, while the Nowlan squad are from the Silver Fox in Summerside.

In the Saturday morning Men’s “B” semi-finals, Nowlan got by Cornwall’s Paul Arsenault foursome by a 5-3 score, while Bill Hope beat O’Leary’s Clair Sweet 9-2 to advance to the 2 pm “B” Qualifier.

The Women’s “B” semi saw Sandy Hope team score six points in the 7th end in a 12-4 victory over the Bev Harding rink from the host club.
The “C” semis and qualifier games go Sunday at 9:30 am and 2 pm. In the women’s semis, Harding and Berry play off at 9:30 am with the winner taking on Sandy Hope at 2 pm with the final spot in the Championship Round on the line. On the men’s side, it’s Sweet vs Nowlan, and Hope playing Arsenault at 9:30 with the winners playing in the “C” Qualifier at 2.
The two-game Championship Round between the winners of the three Qualifier rounds goes Monday at 9:30 am and, if needed, 2 pm.

On Friday afternoon at the Montague Curling Club, defending PEI Masters (age 60+) men’s champ Lou Nowlan and his team from the Silver Fox got off to a good start toward putting his name on the PEI Masters Champions trophy for the 16th time, by winning the first of three men’s Modified Triple Knockout draws and a spot in the PEI Masters Championship Round with a 9-4 win over Cornwall’s Bill Hope foursome.

The game was actually extremely close, tied up going into the seventh end, but a steal of five points by Team Nowlan in that end gave him the lead and Hope was unable to recover.

The Shirley Berry squad from Cornwall won the women’s “A” Qualifier 7-3 over five-time defending women’s champ and Cornwall clubmate Sandy Hope. Berry stole a deuce and two singles to lead 4=0 after three. Hope came back with a single and a deuce to narrow the gap to 4-3 after 5, but Berry did the same, leading 7-3 coming home and ran Hope out of rocks in the eighth.
In the opening draw, Nowlan beat Clair Sweet and his team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary 8-1 while Hope recorded two 4-enders in a 12-4 win over clubmate Paul Arsenault in men’s play, and Berry beat Montague’s Bev Harding and her host club team 8-5, aided by a 5 point 5th end.
Play resumes Saturday with the “B” semi-finals at 9:30 am and the “B” Qualifiers at 2 pm. The “C” division games go Sunday at the same times, while the two-game championship round goes in the same time slots on Monday

Montague to host 2021 PEI Masters Ch’ships
The 2021 PEI Masters Curling Championships, with men’s and women’s divisions for curlers age 60 and over, take place from January 22-25 at the Montague Curling Club, with four men’s and three women’s rinks taking part. The Sandy Hope rink from the Cornwall Curling Club are five-time defending women’s champs, and along with the defending men’s champs, the Lou Nowlan foursome from the Silver Fox, and are back looking to defend their titles. Nowlan has either thrown third or fourth stone for the last ten Masters men’s championship teams, and he has been on the winning team 15 times in total. Other men’s teams entered are the Paul Arsenault and Bill Hope squads from Cornwall, and the Clair Sweet team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary. Hope was a finalist last year. The Bev Harding rink from the host club and the Shirley Berry foursome from Cornwall, who were finalists last year, round out the women’s entries.
Teams in both divisions of the PEI Masters will play a modified triple knockout format, with draws daily at 9:30 am and 2 pm from Friday Jan. 22 through the two-game championship round on Monday the 25th. Explanation for MA/WA and MB/WB:
1. If one team wins all three qualifiers: Championship Round is not required.
2. If one team wins two qualifiers. They play in both MA or WA and MB or WB (and win the event if they win either game). The other section winner plays in MA or WA and has to win to advance to MB or WB.
3. If there are three separate winners: the team that played in the most qualifying games* advances to MB or WB, and the other winners play off in MA or WA. If there is a tie in the number of qualifying games played, then the team that qualified earliest goes to MB or WB and the other two teams play off in MA or WA.
