Berry edges defending champ by 1 point in both ch’ship games to win 5th Senior Women’s title

The Cornwall and Charlottetown rink of Shirley Berry, Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett and Arleen Harris, with coaches Bill Hope and Butch McGee, had to win both championship round games against the June Moyaert foursome from Montague in order to become the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Women’s champions, and they succeeded, but by the narrowest of margins – taking their Monday game 8-7 in an extra end, and today’s match by one point as well, by a 6-5 score. It’s Berry and Harris’ fifth Seniors championship together, with Hope and Ebbett joining the team for their 2010 win.

Defending champion Moyaert, who won two out of the three triple knockout sections, and consequently would have taken the title had she won either of the two championship round games, got off to a great start today, stealing singles in the first three ends, but Berry came back with a single and a pair of deuces in the next three to lead 5-3. Moyaert tied the game with singles in ends seven and eight, but Berry blanked the ninth to retain last rock advantage coming home, and scored a single in the final frame for the win. Other members of the Moyaert rink are Sherren MacKinnon, Terri Thompson, and Kathy Clarey, with Marj Stewart filling in for MacKinnon after a Friday evening fall on the ice sent her to the sidelines.

The Shirley Berry rink will now join the Senior Men’s winners, the Charlie Wilkinson foursome from Charlottetown, at the Canadian Seniors, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

Eight women’s teams and nine men’s teams took part in this year’s PEI Seniors, with the men’s event taking place at the Crapaud Community Curling Club, and the women’s championship being played at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton.

Berry forces sudden death game with extra-end win over Moyaert

Feb. 20-The PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Women’s Curling Championship will now be decided with the 2 pm Tuesday draw. Four-time champion Shirley Berry and her Cornwall and Charlottetown rink forced the sudden death final with an 8-7 extra-end win over defending champion June Moyaert of Montague this afternoon at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. The Montague team, who won two of the three sections in the triple knockout, could have wrapped it up this afternoon, while Berry, who won the A section, has to win both games in the championship round to take the title.

Berry and her rink of Sandy Hope, Shelley Ebbett, and Arleen Harris, with coaches Bill Hope and Butch McGee had a 7-3 lead after seven ends in this afternoon’s game, but Moyaert fought back with a deuce in eight, and stolen singles in nine and ten to tie the game at 7-all and force the extra, where Berry used last rock advantage to score a single for the win. Moyaert’s teammates are Sherren MacKinnon, Terri Thompson and Kathy Clarey, with Marj Campbell filling in for MacKinnon, who fell in the Friday evening draw.

The winners of tomorrow’s game will join the Senior Men’s winners, the Charlie Wilkinson foursome from Charlottetown, at the Canadian Seniors, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

Moyaert and Berry to play in Senior Women’s Championship round

Feb. 20-The two game championship round is set at the PEI Credit Unions Provincial Senior Women’s Curling Championships being played at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. The defending champion June Moyaert rink from the Montague Curling Club, who won their second of three triple knockout sections this morning with a 7-5 win over Paula Baglole and her Summerside rink in the C final, can take the title over four time champ Shirley Berry of Cornwall and Charlottetown with a victory in either this afternoon’s 3 pm game, or Tuesday’s 2 pm match. Berry, who won  the A section, would have to win both games to win the championship.

Moyaert edges Berry to take B final at Seniors.
Moyaert vs Baglole in C final

Feb. 19-Montague’s June Moyaert edged A final winner Shirley Berry of Cornwall and Charlottetown by a 7-6 score in the 11 am draw today to win the B section of the triple knockout Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Women’s Curling Championship at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Moyaert, aided greatly by a six-ender, then went on to beat Cornwall’s Debbie Rhodenizer by a 12-8 score in the C semi-finals at 4 pm, while Berry lost to Paula Baglole of Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, 8-7 in an extra end, in the other semi. Moyaert and Baglole now square off in the C final, Monday at 10 am.

A section winner Berry, B section winner Moyaert, and the C winner will then advance to the two game championship round, Monday at 3 pm and Tuesday at 2 pm. If Moyaert were to win the C flight, she would play in both championship games, and win the title if she took either.

The Senior Women’s champions will join the Senior Men’s winners, the Charlie Wilkinson foursome from Charlottetown, at the Canadian Seniors, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

Berry wins 1st leg of the triple knockout at
PEI Credit Unions Senior Women’s

Feb. 19-The Shirley Berry rink from the Cornwall and Charlottetown curling clubs captured the A flight of the triple knockout Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Women’s Championships Saturday at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton, beating the Paula Baglole team from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club in Summerside by a 10-7 score. The Berry foursome, which includes third Sandy Hope, second Shelley Ebbett, and lead Arleen Harris, with coaches Bill Hope and Butch McGee, were trailing 5-2 after four ends, after Baglole stole the first end and a deuce in the second. The teams traded deuces in ends three and four, but Berry took eight points in the next four ends, following a deuce with a stolen single, triple, and deuce to lead 10-5 after eight. Baglole, whose team includes Debbie MacMurdo, Heather Bernard, and Norma Schurman, took a pair in nine, but ran out of rocks in the 10th.

Berry then picked up another come-from-behind win, 7-5 win over Cornwall clubmate Debbie Rhodenizer, in the evening draw, while Baglole lost 10-4 to June Moyaert of Montague, who picked up a five-ender in the fifth, and is now at 3-1.

Berry, who is the current Masters (age 60+) champion and a four time Seniors (50+) champ, now advances to the B final at 11 this morning, against defending champion Moyaert, who is also won the PEI women’s title back in 1988 with her second, Terri Thompson, as skip. Third Sherren MacKinnon and lead Kathy Clarey complete Moyaert’s Seniors rink.

The C semi-finals go this afternoon at 4, with Berry facing the winner of an 11 am game between Baglole and Cornwall’s Karen Currie, and Moyaert taking on the winner of this morning’s contest between Rhodenizer, and Sharon Horne from the host club. The winners of the C semis advance to the C final, Monday morning at 9.

The A, B, and C section winners than play off in the two game championship round, Monday at 3 pm and, if necessary, Tuesday at 2 pm. If a team wins two of the triple knockout sections, they will play in both championship games, and take the title if they win either. If Berry were to win all three sections, the championship round would not be required.

The Senior Women’s champions will join the Senior Men’s winners, the Charlie Wilkinson foursome from Charlottetown, at the Canadian Seniors, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

*Explanation of Sr. Women's playoff round: If same team wins A, B and C sections, no championship round is needed. If same team wins 2 sections, they play in both CH1 and CH2 and take ch'ship if they win either. If three different winners, the team that played in most qualifying games (13, 18, 21) gets bye to CH2. If tied in games played, earliest qualifier goes to CH2.

Charlie Wilkinson rink wins PEI Senior Men’s championship

The Charlie Wilkinson rink from the Charlottetown Curling Club doubled the Mel Bernard team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club by a 10-5 score in the final to win the Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship, which wrapped up this evening at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. It will be Wilkinson’s second trip to the Senior nationals – he skipped the PEI team back in 2004. This time his squad includes third Ken McGregor, second Phillip McInnis and lead Bill Doherty. This year’s Canadian Seniors take place March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

Wilkinson stole the first four ends to grab an early lead in tonight’s game, taking three singles and a deuce to lead 5-0 after four ends. Bernard, playing with Ted MacFadyen, Lou Nowlan, and Earle Proude, took a pair in five to narrow the lead to 5-2 at the half. The teams traded singles in six and seven, and Bernard took another deuce in the eighth to trail by just one point, with a score of 6-5.  Wilkinson took a single in the ninth, and stole a triple in the 10th to seal the win. Wilkinson won the A section of the triple knockout event, while Rod MacDonald, John Likely, George Koke and Doug MacGregor and their combined Charlottetown/Montague rink won the B. Bernard then took the C event with a 7-6 win over defending champion Bill Hope and his Charlottetown/Cornwall team.

The B and C winners then faced off in the semi-final this afternoon, with Bernard stealing four consecutive ends from MacDonald on his way to a 9-4 win and a pass to this evening’s championship game against A winner Wilkinson.

Nine men’s rinks with members from six of the seven Island curling clubs took part in this event, for curlers age 50 and over. The Senior Women’s championship, also sponsored by Credit Unions of PEI, starts on Friday morning at thee Western Community Curling Club, with eight teams taking part in a triple knockout draw. End-by-end results will be available at LiveCurling.com.

Finalists set for PEI Senior Men's Curling Championship

The three finalists are now determined for the Monday championship round at the Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The Mel Bernard foursome from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside won the C flight in the triple knockout event tonight, stealing the last three ends to edge the Bill Hope foursome from the Charlottetown and Cornwall curling clubs by a 7-6 score in the C final.  Other members of the Bernard team are Ted MacFadyen, Lou Nowlan, and Earle Proude.

The B section finalists were decided Saturday afternoon, with the Charlottetown and Montague rink of Rod MacDonald, John Likely, George Koke and Doug MacGregor coming from behind to score five points in the last three ends to beat the Blair Jay team from the Silver Fox by a 9-5 score in the B final. Charlottetown’s Charlie Wilkinson team, which includes Ken McGregor, Phillip McInnis and Bill Doherty, captured the A section on Friday night in a high-scoring game that included a five ender by Wilkinson, and ending with 13-8 decision over the Clair Sweet team from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary.

The Rod MacDonald rink will now take on the Mel Bernard team in the first game of the championship round, Monday at 1 pm, with the winner taking on Charlie Wilkinson in the final at 6 pm. The winner will advance to the Canadian Seniors Curling Championships, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.

Nine teams took part in the PEI Senior Men’s championship, for curlers age 50 and over. The Senior Women’s event, with eight teams, starts Friday morning.

On Saturday, the team of Rod MacDonald, John Likely, George Koke, and Doug MacGregor, from the Charlottetown and Montague curling clubs, won the B section of the triple knockout Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Men’s Championship, taking place at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. Trailing 5-4 after seven ends, the rink came from behind to win the B final against Blair Jay and his Silver Fox team, taking five points in the last three ends for a 9-5 win. The Charlie Wilkinson team from Charlottetown took the A section on Friday.

In Saturday play, previously-undefeated Wilkinson dropped both his games, losing 8-3 to MacDonald/Likely in the morning game, and 9-7 to Bill Hope in the afternoon.  In the B semis, Jay got by Clair Sweet of O’Leary’s Maple Leaf club 8-7, tying the game with a deuce in the tenth, and stealing a single in an extra end to advance to the game against MacDonald and Likely. Wilkinson rink wins ‘A’ section of PEI Credit Unions Senior Men’s championship.
Draw times changed to 10 and 3 for Saturday

Charlottetown’s Charlie Wilkinson rink, which includes 3rd Ken McGregor, 2nd Phillip MacInnis, and lead Bill Doherty, is now the only defeated team at the Credit Unions of PEI Provincial Senior Men’s Curling Championship, for curlers age 50 and over, being played at the Crapaud Community Curling Club. The Wilkinson team defeated the Clair Sweet foursome from the Maple Leaf Curling Club in O’Leary by a 13-8 score this evening to win the A section final of this triple knockout event. The high scoring match included a stolen deuce by Wilkinson in end two, followed by a stolen five ender, and another steal of two in ends three and four.

Three teams have only one loss, and, along with Wilkinson, will be competing for the B section honours, with the Rod MacDonald/John Likely rink from Charlottetown and Montague taking on Wilkinson, and Summerside’s Blair Jay foursome battling the Sweet team in the B section semi-finals, with the winners advancing to the B final. The B semis and final, originally scheduled for 1 and 6 on Saturday, have now been moved to 10 am and 3 pm, respectively, due to the forecast storm.

One rink, the team of Donald Whitehead, Frank MacDonald, Dario Zannier, and Kenny Stewart, from the host Crapaud club have 3 losses, and are now out of the competition. Still alive with two losses are defending champion Bill Hope from Charlottetown and Cornwall, and three rinks from Summerside’s Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club, skipped by Mel Bernard, Barry Cameron, and Marc LeClair.

In games in Friday’s 1 pm draw, Wilkinson scored 4 in the 6th end to bring a speedy conclusion to game against Jay with a 9-2 score, Hope beat LeClair 8-3, MacDonald/Likely downed Cameron 8-1, and Sweet stole 4 in the 8th end in a 9-4 win over Bernard.

In other 6 pm matches, MacDonald/Likely edged Bernard 8-6, Crapaud’s Whitehead team, despite a five-ender in the 5th, lost 13-8 to LeClair, and Jay doubled Hope 10-5.

The C flight semis go Sunday at 1, with the C final at 6 pm. The two game championship round, between the winners of the 3 sections, goes Monday at 1 and 6 respectively. If Wilkinson were to win all three sections, the championship round would not be played. If a team wins two sections, they would play in both championship games, and take the championship if they won either game.

The eventual winner will advance to the Canadian Seniors championships, March 17-25 in Abbotsford BC.
