- PEICA holding Junior Curling Camp, Feb. 12 in Montague January 25, 2012

A Learn to Curl, Skills Development and Talent Identification Junior Curling Camp will be held at the Montague Curling Club on Sunday February 12, and is open to male and female PEI junior curlers from novice to intermediate level, focusing on those with at least one year’s experience, and between 10 and 15 years of age.
Emphasis will be on Learning, Skills Development, Fun, and Talent Identification. Registration is from 8:30 to 9 am, with on ice and classroom sessions from 9 am until 5 pm.
The cost is $100.00 per team including coach, or $25.00 per individual – Space is limited to 32 participants and selection will be on a first-come first-paid basis. Morning & afternoon nutrition breaks will be provided.

- PEICA to hold Junior Curling Camp at Maple Leaf club on Jan. 29 January 5, 2012

On Sunday 29 Jan. 2012 the PEICA will be holding a junior (age 20 & under) Learn to Curl/Skills Development and Talent Identification Camp open to all Island junior teams and individuals from novice to intermediate level.
Please Note: The camp will focus on novice to intermediate junior teams and individuals who have at least one year of curling experience, primarily between 10 and 15 years of age, with the main focuses on learning, skills development, and fun, and will provide an opportunity for talent identification.
CAMP LOCATION: O’Leary Maple Leaf Curling Club
Sunday 29 January
8:30 a.m. – 9:00 am Check in and Change up
9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Camp – On-ice and classroom sessions

- Update on Atlantic Canada Coaches "A Podium Project" Workshop in Crapaud Dec. 3-4 November 17, 2011
The PEI Curling Association and Curl Atlantic are hosting an Atlantic Canada Coaches Workshop at the Crapaud Community Curling Club on December 3 & 4. The workshop is part of the Podium Project, an initiative through Sport Canada and the Canadian Curling Association, which focuses on the training and preparation of curlers in the 12-15 age group, using guidelines set out in the Long Term Athlete Development program.

Canadian Curling Association (CCA) National Coach Consultant Pat Reid will be the main presenter at this 2-day classroom and on-ice, workshop, making it wonderful opportunity for Island coaches. Pat’s coaching experience ranges from Junior, Provincial, National, International and Olympic teams over the past 25 years. She was team leader for the Sandra Schmirler Olympic Gold medal team at the 1998 Olympics.
Sessions on Saturday and until noon hour Sunday will primarily be focusing on coaches who are or may potentially be working with Junior Teams 12 – 15 years of age in the next few years.
The Sunday afternoon session from 1:00 – 5:00pm will be open to coaches of older Junior and Adult Teams.
Cost: $25.00 per person (Saturday, and Sunday until noon), $10.00 per person Sunday 1:00-5:00 pm.

- Reminder of Level II Umpires Clinic November 15, 2011

This is a reminder that a Level II Umpires Clinic will be held Sunday Nov. 27 at the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club’s upstairs meeting room, from 9 am to 4:30 pm, including an open book exam, with the first hour of the clinic used for a Level I update/refresher.
Cost is $35 for those who wish to be CCA certified, or $20 for former Level II umpires who wish to audit the clinic. Registration deadline is Monday November 21. - Young athletes check out Rocks and Rings at Sport Fair October 27, 2011
(Sport PEI) A big thank-you to the schools, children, sports, sponsors and volunteers who helped make the 2011 Sport Fair such a success. 20 sports and almost 2000 children attended the two day fair at the PEI Indoor Soccer Complex in Stratford.

Note: The Capital One Rocks and program, now entering its fourth year, has introduced curling to over 160,000 Canadian students to date, and continues to expand its reach. It makes learning about curling easy, by bringing customized equipment to schools in day long visits. - Reminder: PEICA to hold Club Coach Youth and Tech. Club Coach workshops October 20, 2011
The PEI Curling Association will be holding a Canadian Curling Association Club Coach Youth workshop, for persons who work with junior curlers age 6-14, on Sunday Oct. 30 from 9 am to 5 pm at the Charlottetown Curling Club. This workshop covers modules 1- 8, and includes: Setting the Scene, Ethical Coaching, Practice Planning, Safety, Game Orientation, Teaching the Skills, Program Management and Games, and Drills and Activities. Cost is $75, and registration deadline is Oct. 25.
The PEICA are also conducting a CCA Technical Club Coach workshop (formerly Level I Technical), at the Crapaud Community Curling Club on Dec. 3 from 9 am to 4 pm, and continuing on Dec. 4 from 9 am to 3:30 pm. Cost is $90, and registration deadline is Nov. 25.

- Timeout rule changes for this season October 19, 2011
After only one year of COACH TIME the rule has changed again, here are the details:
Summary of Rule Changes 2011-2012 (note: the CCA is scheduled to print a new rule book for the 2012-2014 period. The changes from this year’s AGM are not in the current rule book, however, they are effective for 2011-12. The changes affect only the Officiated portion.)GAME TIME OUTS – UNIVERSITY, JUNIORS, BANTAM, WHEELCHAIR
- Game time remains at 73 minutes per team (68 minutes for wheelchair)
- Eight (8) minutes for each extra end
- Each team will be ALLOWED to call two (2) time-outs per game and one (1) time-out for each extra end
- Each time-out will last ninety (90) seconds which includes travel time. (note: additional time can be added at club-based events at the discretion of the Chief Umpire.)
- Coaches running or jogging during the time-out will not be tolerated. The game clock will start if this occurs.
- Coach or 5th players (but not both) can meet with the team anytime during the 90-second time-out.
- The Coach or 5th of the team NOT calling the timeout will be allowed to meet their team on the backboard at the home end only.
MIXED, SENIORS, MEN, WOMEN
- Game time CHANGES to seventy-one (71) minutes per team
- Eight (8) minutes for each extra end
- Each team will be ALLOWED to call two (2) time-outs per game and one (1) time-out for each extra end
- Each time-out will last ninety (90) seconds which includes travel time. (note: additional time can be added at club-based events at the discretion of the Chief Umpire.)
- Coaches running or jogging during the time-out will not be tolerated. The game clock will start if this occurs.
- Coach or 5th players (but not both) can meet with the team anytime during the 90-second time-out.

Note: This time-out policy for length of game (71 minutes) will be utilized at all other Season of Champions televised events (i.e. Canada Cup, Pre-Trials, Canadian Curling Trials) with the exception of World-based Championships hosted in Canada (i.e. World Championships).
