Lincoln Peters rink wins 17 & Under Men's Final
Erika Nabuurs rink wins 17 & Under Women's Final

The Lincoln Peters rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club scored three points in the second end, took another triple in the sixth, stole a single in the seventh, and stole a deuce in the eighth end to defeat Charlottetown's Brett Gallant rink 9-3 in the Monday afternoon final of the Provincial 17 and Under Men's section.

Tom Peters (coach), Nick Gagné, Mike Carew, Matt Praught, Lincoln Peters

Brett Gallant, Mitchell O'Shea, Patrick Callbeck (missing: Matt Smith)

The rink of Erika Nabuurs, Kiri Campbell, Jessica Thomson, and Sarah Moore scored four points in the second end, and went on to take a 12-6 victory over the Rachel Arbing rink of the Maple Leaf Curling Club, to win the Provincial 17 and Under women's championship Sunday afternoon at the Cornwall Curling Club.

The Peters and Nabuurs rinks will compete in the Atlantic 17 and Under Curling Championships, which have been moved to the Silver Fox, from April 12-14.

Jessica Thomson, Sarah Moore, Kiri Campbell, Erika Nabuurs, Kathy Clarey (coach)

Angela Dalton, Amy Lewis, Rachel Arbing, Nora Martin, Dale Adams (coach)

In the men's semi-final, Brett Gallant of the Charlottetown Curling Club made a great shot to score a triple in the fifth end, as his rink advanced to the finals, with a 6-5 decision over Cornwall's Ryan Roggeveen rink.

The Ryan Roggeveen rink from the host Cornwall Curling Club defeated Montague's Sean Clarey rink 5-2 Sunday morning to clinch third place, as round robin action wrapped up at the Provincial 17 and Under Curling Championships. Roggeveen meets second place Brett Gallant from the Charlottetown Curling Club in the semi-final match Sunday at 2 PM. The winner plays first place Lincoln Peters, from the Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club, in the final on Monday at 2 PM.

The women's final has been moved to Sunday at 2, and features Montague's Erika Nabuurs rink against Rachel Arbing of O'Leary's Maple Leaf club.

As no tie-breakers are required in either section in the Provincial 17 and Under Championships at the Cornwall Curling Club, some draw changes are being made. The final men's round robin draw will now take place at 10 AM on Sunday morning, and the women's championship game and the men's semi-final game will be moved ahead to Sunday at 2 PM.

After Saturday play on the men's side, Lincoln Peters of the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club was undefeated in round robin play, and, regardless of his score in his final round robin game, has earned a berth in the final, Monday at 2 PM.  Brett Gallant of Charlottetown, will play the winner of the Sunday morning round robin game between Sean Clarey of Montague, and Cornwall's Ryan Roggeveen rink in the 2 PM Sunday semi-final, with the winner meeting Peters in the final.

In women's play, it will be Erika Nabuurs of Montague meeting Rachel Arbing of the Maple Leaf Curling Club in the Sunday afternoon final.

The Provincial 17 and Under Curling Championships are taking place at the Cornwall Curling Club from January 31st to February 3rd, 2002. The defending champions, Meaghan Hughes and Steven van Ouwerkerk, have graduated to the 20 and under "Junior" division (and are skipping and playing third, respectively, on this year's Provincial Junior championship rinks), so there will be new champions, chosen from seven men's and three women's rinks representing five PEI curling clubs. This year's event uses round-robin format, as opposed to the double-knockout draw used in previous years.  Round-robin games are 8 ends, with 10 ends for the finals. The winning rinks will advance to the Atlantic Junior 17 & Under, which will now be held at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, from April 12-14 (change in dates and location).

*If one tie breaker is required, it will be played Sunday at 1pm. If 2 tie breakers are required, the first will be played Sunday at 11:30am, and the second will be played Sunday at 2:30pm.

The championship is a one game final.

TIE BREAKERS
: Teams that complete the round robin with identical win/loss records are considered to be tied. Teams tied for a playoff position shall only be eliminated from the playoffs by playing a tie-breaker game(s). The only playoff position that shall involve tie-breaker games is the third and final playoff position. When teams are tied for a playoff position, the round-robin win/loss record of those teams against each other shall be used to determine their ranking and therefore how the teams are positioned in the playoff draw or tie-breaker game(s). When the ranking of teams cannot be determined by comparing round-robin win/loss records against the teams involved in the tie, the ranking shall be determined by the implementation of a skill based team ranking process. When the round-robin win/loss record of the two teams involved in a play-off or tie-breaker game(s)is the same, the team that won the game between the two during the round-robin shall have choice of either last rock OR rock handle color.

Example 1

Team A finishes at 6-0, Team B at 5-1 and Teams C and D are 3-3. Teams C & D are tied for the 3rd and final playoff position and therefore must play a tiebreaker game to decide 3rd position. The winner of the round robin game between C & D will have choice of either last rock or rock color in the tie breaker game.

Example 2

Team A finishes at 5-1, teams B, C & D finish at 4-2. Head to head records of games between B, C & D will be used to determine playoff seeding. If this cannot determine playoff seeding, the skills ranking (draw to the button) will be used to determine the seeding. Team B has a distance of 5 feet, C 8 feet and D 13 feet. Therefore team B is ranked 2nd and will play the winner of the tie breaker game between teams C & D in the semi final. C will have choice of either last rock or rock color in the tie breaker game by virtue of finishing ahead of D in the skill contest.

Skill Based Team Ranking Process

Immediately following warm ups, the skill based ranking will take place. All four members of each team shall throw one draw shot to the tee, with sweeping allowed, on the sheet on which they are to play. Each individual's rock that can be measured shall be measured to determine its distance from the tee up to a distance of 6 feet, then shall be removed from play. Stones that cannot be measured due to their close proximity to the tee shall be assigned a distance of 0. Stones that are located outside the 6 foot perimeter shall be assigned a distance of 6 feet 1 inch. The team's accumulated total distance from the tee shall determine their ranking. The least accumulated distance shall receive the highest ranking and so on until ranking is completed. In the case of a three-player team, the first player to deliver a stone for his/her team shall also deliver the final stone for his/her team.

Additional Rules:

All teams must name their line-up prior to the start of each game if there is a change on that team.
