UPEI Men 2-1, Women 0-3 after Thursday play at Univ. Ch’ships

UPEI’s Adam Casey rink, after losing their opener, have won two in a row, winning Thursday afternoon’s game against McGill’s Patrick Cawley foursome by a lopsided 9-1 score, taking a pair in the third end and following it with steals of one, two, one, and two in subsequent ends to bring the game to an early conclusion.

UPEI’s women’s team, skipped by Sarah Clow, slipped to 0-3, losing 10-4 to Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Julie Devereaux foursome, giving up triples in ends five and seven.

Their next game, against Laurentian, was closer, with UPEI stealing a deuce in the first end. Laurentian came back with a triple in end two, and led 7-5 after seven. The Ontario team then scored singles in the final three ends to win 10-5.

Round robin play continues through Saturday morning, with the UPEI men’s team playing Laurier at 10 am, and Calgary at 10 pm on Friday, while the women play Manitoba at 6 pm Friday, and wrap up round robin play Saturday morning at 9:30 against Alberta. The semi-finals go Sunday morning at 10, with the finals at 3 pm (all times Atlantic). The winning teams will advance to the 2010 Karuizawa International Curling Championships, which take place late February in Japan.
