Birt rink 2-0 at London Charity Cashspiel

PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink is undefeated going into Saturday play at the Southwestern Ontario Women’s Charity Cashspiel in London Ont. On Friday, Birt beat Alison Goring of Toronto 6-1, and stole four points in the seventh end in a 9-5 victory over four time Canadian and two time world Seniors champ Anne Dunn of Cambridge Ont.

Birt, whose team includes Shelly Bradley, Leslie MacDougall, Stefanie Clark, and coach Charlie Sullivan, now plays 2010 Olympic competitors Team Switzerland, skipped by Mirjam Ott, at 12:30 Eastern, with the winner facing either Sherry Middaugh of Victoria Harbour Ont, or Wisconsin’s Erica Brown at 5 ET.

Other undefeated teams include World Women’s Champion and last year’s event runner-up Bingyu Wang of China, Cathy Auld of Toronto, Jacqueline Harrison of Waterdown Ont., and Rachel Homan of Ottawa, who won this event the last two years.

The quarterfinals of this $32,000 triple-knockout event are Sunday at 7:30 p.m., with the semifinals and final Monday at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively (all times Eastern).

All proceeds from the charity cashspiel, now in its 13th year, go toward breast cancer research. To date, the cashspiel has raised $182,915 for the cause.
