MacLeans and Smiths lead Canada Games Trials

With one draw remaining in the double round robin, the Amanda MacLean rink from O’Leary leads the junior women’s side of the Canada Games Curling Trials at the Charlottetown Curling Club, with a 4-1 win-loss record. Close behind is the Veronica Smith rink, from Cornwall, at 3-2. Amanda’s brother Matthew, and Cornwall’s Tyler Smith rink share the junior men’s lead, with 3-2 records. Tony Nabuurs from Montague, and Jeff Taylor from Cornwall are both 2 and 3 on the junior men’s side, while Jenny McLean of Summerside, who had the lead after opening day play, struggled on Saturday and slipped to 2-3. Leah Deveau from Montague, who lost her first three games by only a point, picked up a win on Saturday to go to 1-4.

The top two teams in each division will advance to the finals. Amanda MacLean has clinched her berth, regardless of what happens in her final round robin game, Sunday at 9, against Deveau.  A Veronica Smith win against Jenny McLean will give her the other finals berth. A loss would force a tiebreaker between the two teams, at 2 pm Sunday. If no tiebreaker is needed, the junior women’s final will go Sunday at 2.

Tiebreakers are a strong possibility on the junior men’s side. If both 3-2 teams, Smith and MacLean, win their final round robin games, against Tony Nabuurs and Jeff Taylor, respectively, they will advance to the finals. Any other scenario will involve tiebreakers. which would take place Sunday at 2 pm, and, if needed, 9 am Monday. If one or two tiebreakers are required, the final will go Monday at 2. If no tiebreakers, the final is Sunday at 2.
