B Finals decided, C finals set at Sylvan Learning 17 and Under

The B section finals of the Sylvan Learning Provincial age 17 and Under Curling Championships were decided this morning at the Silver Fox, with the Tiffany Sweet team from the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary winning the junior women’s B section, and the Jeff Taylor foursome from Cornwall taking the junior men’s.

In a repeat of the A final, the Sweet team again beat Cornwall’s Veronica Smith rink, this time by a 6-5 score. Other members of the Sweet team are Chantal Clements, and Kathleen and Laura O’Meara, with coaches Clair and Ralph Sweet. Sweet then went on to beat clubmate Amanda MacLean by a 6-2 score, to advance to the C division final, Sunday morning at 11. Once again, Sweet will be playing the Veronica Smith team, who beat Jenny McLean of the host Silver Fox rink by a 7-3 score this afternoon. Other members of the Smith rink are Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey, with Paul Smith and Sarah Fullerton sharing coaching duties. If the Sweet team wins the C final, they will take the championship without the need for the two game championship round. If the Smith rinks wins, they will have to beat the Sweet foursome in both of the championship games, Sunday and Monday at 3 pm, while Sweet would win if she takes either game.

In the men’s B final, Cornwall’s Jeff Taylor team, which includes Alex Sutherland, Alex Jenkins, and Jonathan Shut, with coach A.J, Campbell, beat A section winner Kyle Hughes by a 7-3 score. The 11 am Sunday C final will see Hughes take on Matthew MacLean of O’Leary. Hughes beat Shawn Pitre of the Western Community club in Alberton by an 8-5 score, while MacLean beat Taylor 6-2 Saturday afternoon to advance to the C final. Rounding out the MacLean rink are Marshall Smallman, Kevin Gallant, and Alex MacLean, with coaches Glen MacLean and Shannon Smallman. As there were separate A and B winners, there will be a championship round, with the winners of the three sections. Should Hughes win the C final, he would play in both championship games, set for 3 pm Sunday and Monday, and win the championship if he took either. If MacLean wins the C division, he would play Taylor in the first championship game, with the winner facing Hughes in the final.

The winning junior men’s and women’s rinks will advance to the Atlantic 17 and Under Championships, April 2-4 at the Riverside Golf and Curling Club in Rothesay NB.
