The B final will be a rematch of the A final in the women’s section of the Sylvan Learning age 17 and Under Curling Championships at the Silver Fox, with A section winner Tiffany Sweet of the Maple Leaf club in O’Leary taking on A section runner-up Veronica Smith of Cornwall. Sweet had doubled Smith 6-3 in the A final of this triple knockout event on Friday afternoon, and went on to beat Summerside’s Jenny McLean 7-3 in the evening draw, stealing a triple in the final end. Smith followed a four point second end with a stolen triple in the third to bring her game against Amanda MacLean of O’Leary to a speed conclusion with a final score of 10-4. This advances Sweet and Smith to the B final Saturday morning at 11. Other members of the Tiffany Sweet rink are Chantal Clements, Kathleen O’Meara, and Laura O’Meara, with coaches Clair and Ralph Sweet. Rounding out the Smith squad are Katie Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey, with Paul Smith and Sarah Fullerton sharing coaching duties.
In the junior men’s section, the B final Saturday at 11 am will see A final winner Kyle Hughes and his combined Montague/Charlottetown team take on Cornwall’s Jeff Taylor foursome. Hughes, who got by Cornwall’s Tyler Smith rink 6-5 in the A final on Friday afternoon, doubled Matthew MacLean of O’Leary 6-3 pm Friday evening, while Taylor beat Cornwall clubmate Smith, also by a 6-3 score, to setup the B final. Tony Nabuurs, Taylor McInnis, and Chandler Matheson, with coach Arnold Nabuurs, round out the Hughes rink, while Taylor’s teammates are Alex Sutherland, Alex Jenkins, and Jonathan Schut, with coach A.J. Campbell.
The men’s and women’s C finals are set for Sunday morning at 11, following the C semi-finals at 3 pm Saturday.
The two game championship round between the section winners goes Sunday and Monday at 3 pm. If Sweet or Hughes win all three sections, the final round of their division will not be needed. If a team wins two sections, they will win the championship if they take either championship round game. The winning rinks will advance to the Atlantic 17 and Under Championships, April 2-4 at the Riverside Golf and Curling Club in Rothesay NB.
