O’Rourke rink 2-0 after day one at SW Ont. Charity Spiel

PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke rink are undefeated after opening day play at the 14th annual Southwestern Ontario Women’s Charity Spiel in London Ontario.  Proceeds from the event go to the London Regional Cancer Centre. Event winners earn a berth in the Canada Cup, Dec. 1-5 in Medicine Hat AB.

The PEI foursome, which also includes Erin Carmody, Geri-Lynn Ramsay, and Tricia Affleck, beat Lockerbie Scotland’s Anna Sloan team 5-3 in their opener, and defeated the Lisa Farnell rink from Peterborough ON 9-7 in the afternoon draw. Farnell scored five points in the sixth end to grab a 7-5 lead in that game, but the PEI team came back with a deuce in the seventh and stole another pair in the eighth for the win.

On Saturday morning, the O’Rourke team face Coldwater Ontario’s Sherry Middaugh rink, who have won this event three times, and were last year’s runners-up, losing in the final to the Cathy Auld rink from Toronto.

24 women’s teams are taking part. The event finals go Monday at 1 pm Eastern.
