Leave it to a Scot to be alone on top at the Sobeys Slam women’s curling event in New Glasgow.
Scotland’s Eve Muirhead, the reigning world silver medallist, slammed current and four-time Canadian women’s champion Jennifer Jones 7-1 Friday to grab the first available playoff spot in the $55,000 women’s Grand Slam event.
Muirhead, 3-0, scored two in the fourth end to break a scoreless draw. A five in the sixth end brought the match to a halt
Colleen Jones lost 6-1 to P.E.I.’s Kathy O’Rourke for a 2-2 slate. Jones plays Saskatchewan’s Cindy Ricci this morning with the loser out.
Sarah Rhyno and Marie Christianson, both former Nova Scotia junior champions, led the host province with a single loss each heading into Friday’s late play.
Rhyno defeated P.E.I.’s Susanne Birt 7-6 early Friday and faced Ontario’s Jacqueline Harrison in the night draw.
