Katie Fullerton and Tyler Smith rinks win M&M Meat Shops 15 and Under

The M&M Meat Shops provincial age 15 and Under curling championships wrapped up Sunday afternoon at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with Cornwall’s Katie Fullerton rink going  undefeated to win the girl’s title, and the Tyler Smith rink from the Silver Fox  and Maple Leaf clubs taking the boy’s division.

Three of the members of the Fullerton team – Fullerton, Sabrina Smith, and Chloe McCloskey, were also on last year’s winning team, which was skipped by Veronica Smith, who is no longer in the age category, with Justina McCloskey joining the rink at lead, and the other three members moving up a position. They defeated the Emily Hennessey team from Charlottetown by a 9-4 score in this afternoon’s final, stealing four in the second end for an early 5-0 lead. Paul Smith coaches the Fullerton foursome. Playing with Hennessey were Desiree MacDonald, Megan Thompson, and Emma Matheson, with Mike and Estelle Hennessey serving as chaperones for the team. Fullerton   finished round robin play with a perfect 5-0 record, while Hennessey tied with Jenny McLean of Summerside at 3-2, beating McLean 7-2 in the semi-final.

The Tyler Smith rink, which plays out of the host club,  includes three members from this year’s Canada Games team – Smith, and Noah and Parker O’Connor, with Marshall Smallman from the Maple Leaf club joining the rink at third. Smith calls the game but throws lead rocks, with Parker O’Connor throwing fourth stones, and Noah playing second.  They finished round robin play with a 4-2 win-loss record, tied with the Devin Schut rink from Cornwall. In this afternoon’s final, they edged the Schut team 7-6, scoring six of their seven points in the second end. Other members of the runner-up Schut team are Jonathan Schut, Spencer Matheson, and Mitchell Schut, with coach Mike Schut.  In semi-final play, Smith took three points in the final end in a 6-5 come from behind win over Brooks Roche of Montague, while Schut defeated Alex MacFadyen of the Silver Fox 10-3.

Six girls rinks and four boys teams took part in the championship.
