Alberta’s John Morris rink wins Canadian Firefighters

The rink from the Rocky View County Fire Services  and the Calgary fire department, skipped by Canada’s most famous curling firefighter, John Morris, who normally plays third for Alberta’s Olympic gold medal-winning Kevin Martin team, beat Saskatchewan’s Gregg Tarasoff rink 11-5 this afternoon to win the 2011 Canadian Fire Fighters Muscular Dystrophy Hydrant Curling Championship, at the Ogden Legion Curling Club in Calgary. The game was brought to an early conclusion when the Alberta team picked up four points in the seventh end.

Alberta, who finished in third place in the round robin, also dominated this morning’s semi-final, winning 9-2 over BC in a game that went only five ends.

Saskatchewan finished the round robin in first place with a 9-1 record, followed by BC at 8-2, Alberta at 7-3, and Southern Ontario, the Northwest Territories, and Quebec all at 5-5. Quebec edged NWT 7-6 in an extra end in the the first tiebreaker game, but lost 8-5 to Southern Ontario in the second.

In the Page 1 vs 2 on Friday, Saskatchewan beat BC 7-4 to advance to today’s  final, while Alberta beat Southern Ontario 9-6 in the Page 3-4 to advance to the 9 am semi-final against Page 1 vs 2 runner-up BC.

PEI’s Gordon MacFadyen rink finished round robin play on Thursday with a 4-6 record, and did not advance to the championship round.
