Gallant splits openers at Casino Lac-Leamy Challenge Spiel

PEI’s Brett Gallant rink, which includes Eddie MacKenzie at third, second Anson Carmody, and lead Alex MacFadyen, won their opener at the Casino Lac-Leamy Challenge Spiel in Gatineau Quebec, 8-6 over the Dale Matchett rink of Brantford Ont. on Thursday morning, but lost their afternoon game 8-7 in an extra end over the Robert Desjardins foursome of Chicoutimi Quebec. Team Gallant now takes on the Chris Gardner team from Ottawa at 12:15 this afternoon PEI time. If they win, they play again at 5:45 pm ADT. If they lose, they take to the ice at 3 Atlantic. The finals go Sunday at 4 pm Atlantic.

The Brad Gushue rink, which include’s Brett’s former teammate Adam Casey, is 2-0, with opening day wins over Ian Fitzner-LeBlanc of Halifax, and Mike Harris of Oakville Ontario, and face local favourite Jean-Michel Menard at 5:45 this afternoon.

The Gallant and Gushue rinks are competing in the Men’s Elite Class of this event, which includes 24 teams. The competition is part of the World Curling Tour and the Provincial Curling Tour. The elimination round is a triple knock-out formula. Eight  teams qualify for the playoffs. All playoff teams will receive a purse of at least $ 3000 out of a total purse of $36,500. All games are 8 ends.
