Besides the Canadian Mixed, which starts Saturday in Sudbury, with Brett Gallant, Erin and Anson Carmody, and Michelle Mackie representing PEI, Island rinks are in action this weekend at the Molson Cashspiel at the Mayflower Curling Club in Halifax, and at the Sackville Junior Open Cashspiel in Sackville NB.
The Mayflower spiel, part of the Atlantic Curling Tour, goes Friday to Sunday, with 30 men’s teams taking part, including the PEI rink men’s rink of Donald Clarey, Larry Richards, David Rice, and Steven MacLeod, out of the Montague Curling Club, and the team of Kim Dolan, Sinead Dolan, Michala Robison, and Nancy Cameron on the women’s side. The Sackville Junior Open Cashspiel goes Saturday and Sunday, with 6 teams in the 20 and Under division, and 4 in the 15 and Under. Tyler Smith, who skipped PEI’s Canada Games junior men’s team, is in the 15 and Under division, but, rather than skipping in this “open” event, he is backing up an even younger New Brunswick skip, 12 year old Spencer Acton. According to Kathleen Trites of Sackville, the southeast junior co-ordinator with Curling NB, “He’s only been curling for a year, but he calls a game like he’s been curling for 20 years”.
The PEI rinks in the event are in the 20 & Under division, and are skipped by Alex Matters of Charlottetown and Jeffrey Taylor of Cornwall.
