Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel starts Friday at the Fox

The fifth annual Fall Fling Junior Cashspiel gets underway Friday at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside, with 12 junior men’s and an equal number of junior women’s rinks from around the Maritimes taking part (10 teams are from PEI, 14 are from NS/NB). Defending champs Spencer Pitre from the Charlottetown Curling Club, and Lindsay Doucet from Chester NS are not back this year, so there will be new champions at this very popular event, which quickly filled this year, and had another nine teams on the waiting list.

Among the junior men’s rinks are the Alex Matters foursome from Charlottetown, and the Jeff Taylor team from Cornwall, who came 1st and 2nd respectively in the Junior Open Cashspiel in Sackville NB this past weekend, and the Matthew MacLean rink from O’Leary, who won the Codiac Maritime Junior Spiel in Moncton last month. Also entered are the Sam Ramsay junior men’s team and the Sarah Fullerton junior women’s rink, both of whom recently competed in the JSI OVCA Junior SuperSpiel in Ottawa. Other junior women’s rinks entered include the Amanda MacLean foursome, curling out of Cornwall this season, who were PEI’s Canada Games women’s team last year. Laura O’Meara has stepped in to replace Emily Gray, who is preparing for the Youth Olympics in Austria in January.
