Lecocq rink wins Hub City men’s final, Comeau beats Birt in women’s

The Marc Lecocq rink scored a triple in the sixth and stole a single in the seventh in a 6-2 victory over another New Brunswick team, skipped by Jeremy Mallais, to win the men’s final of the $24,000 Hub City Shootout cashspiel this afternoon in Moncton.

The Sandy Comeau rink of Moncton beat PEI’s Suzanne Birt foursome 8-3 in the women’s final. Birt had a spotless 5-0 record going into the final, while Comeau was 3-2.

PEI’s Robert Shaw rink lost out to eventual winner Lecocq in the semi-finals, by a 7-1 score.  Brett Gallant, who qualified Friday in the A section of the triple-knockout men’s event, lost 7-4 to Lecocq in the quarter-finals, while Rod MacDonald also made it to the quarters, but lost 6-4 to John Luckhurst of NS. Shaw won his quarter-final game 5-3 over Vaughan to advance to the semis.

PEI’s Donna Butler rink finished round robin play at 2-3, while Meaghan Hughes went 1-4. The other men’s teams entered were skipped by Jamie Newson and Robert Campbell, who both went 0-3 in the men’s triple knockout for the weekend, while Mike Gaudet went 3-3.

24 men’s teams and 8 women’s rink took part in the fifth annual event.

The Atlantic Curling Tour travels to Halifax next weekend for the CFB Halifax Propeller Men’s and SKYY Women’s cashspiels, rescheduled from earlier in the season. The Brett Gallant team and the Sarah Fullerton rink, PEI’s junior women’s champs, are taking part.
