Team Gushue bows out in quarter-final round at Baden Masters

St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador’s Brad Gushue team, which includes PEI natives Adam Casey and Brett Gallant at third and second respectively, lost out in the quarter-final round on Saturday by a 5-3 score to the Swiss Peter de Cruz rink, finishing their weekend play at the season-opening Baden Masters in Switzerland with a 3-2 win-loss record. Earlier on Saturday, the Gushue squad downed the Bernhard Werthemann foursome from Switzerland by a 9-5 score. Gushue had won this event back in 2007 and 2009.

In this morning’s 4 am Atlantic semi-finals, de Cruz beat Mario Freiberger, also from Switzerland, by a 7-3 score, while Rasmus Sterne of Denmark, who doubled Gushue 8-4 in round robin play, lost 5-4 to defending champion Svend Michel of Switzerland. The all-Swiss final, between de Cruz and Michel, goes at 8:30 Atlantic this morning. The event has a total purse of approximately $30,000.
