Andrea Crawford rink wins Lady Monctonian – Birt team out in semis

New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford rink, which includes third Becky Atkinson, second Danielle Parsons, and lead Jodie deSolla, needed only five ends to defeat the Theresa Breen foursome from Nova Scotia by an 8-1 score in Sunday afternoon’s final of the Lady Monctonian cashspiel at Curl Moncton. A steal of three points in the fifth put the game out of reach.

PEI’s Suzanne Birt rink, who were event runners-up last year, made it as far as the semi-final round, but lost their semi 8-6 to the Breen team.  Crawford won her semi 6-1 over Nova Scotian Tanya Hilliard.

Birt and her team, which includes third Shelly Bradley, second Sarah Fullerton, lead Leslie MacDougall, and coach Peter Gallant, scored five points in one end in their quarter-final this morning against Fredericton NB’s Mary Jane McGuire rink, winning 9-1. Team Birt finished round robin play Saturday with a 3-2 win-loss record.

The  Kim Dolan rink, last year’s PEI Scotties champions, includes Rebecca Jean MacDonald, Sinead Dolan, and Michala Robison, and also finished at 3-2, but did not advance to the money round. PEI’s Kathy O’Rourke team ended play at 2-2. The team includes Meaghan Hughes, Jackie Reid, Tricia Affleck, and fifth player Stefanie Clark, along with coach Peter MacDonald.

17 teams began play Friday in the annual event, with cash, and Canadian Team Ranking System points, used in the Olympic qualification process, on the line.
