The 6th annual Molson Canadian Hub City Shootout cashspiel continues today and wraps up on Sunday at Moncton’s Beaver and Beausejour clubs.
Six PEI men’s rinks and three Island women’s teams began play Thursday in the event.
On the round robin women’s side, the Kathy O’Rourke rink won their opener Friday 7-4 over Sandy Comeau of NB, and take on Suzanne Birt and her team this morning at 9:30. Birt lost her opener 7-5 to Mary Jane McGuire of NB, while Montague’s Tammy Dewar foursome were doubled 6-3 by the Sylvie Robichaud rink from NB.
In triple knockout mens play, the Rod MacDonald rink rebounded from their opening day loss with a pair of wins on Friday, edging the Andrew Symonds rink from NL 6-5 and their clubmates the Eddie MacKenzie rink 5-4. MacDonald now plays Pierre Fraser from NB at 9:30 this morning, with the winner advancing to a B qualifier. Robert Shaw is also in the B section, following a win yesterday over Dan Philip of NB, and plays Zach Eldridge of NB at 8:30 this morning, with the winner advancing to a B qualifier.
Still alive in the C division are the PEI teams skipped by Blair Weeks, Jamie Newson, Mike Gaudet, and Eddie MacKenzie. Weeks lost 7-5 to Dan Philips of NB yesterday while Newson followed up losses to Mark Dacey and Mark Kehoe with a 6-4 win over John Luckurst of NS. Weeks and Newson both play at 1:30, with the losers going home and the winners advancing to C qualifiers. MacKenzie won his opener Friday night, but suffered a pair of losses on Friday, to Rod MacDonald and to New Brunswick’s Zack Eldridge. He plays Brent MacDougall of NS at 830 this morning. Mike Gaudet won his opener Friday morning, 9-6 over James Grattan of NB, but lost his next two games, 6-5 to Paul Dobson of NB and 8-6 to Mark Kehoe of NS. Gaudet takes on Martin Ferland of Quebec at 9:30 this morning.
The women’s final is Sunday at 12 noon, with the men’s following at 3:30.
