Hope and Newson to play in 1st of four qualifiers for PEI Mixed Ch’ship round

It will be the Bill Hope rink from Cornwall taking on Charlottetown’s Jamie Newson foursome in the first of four qualifier games for the Page championship round at the ten team Curl PEI Provincial Mixed Curling Championship, being played at the Montague Curling Club. Hope downed Donald Clarey and his host club rink 9-3 this afternoon, while Newson stole two triples in an 8-5 decision over Charlottetown clubmate Jamie Newson, to advance to the “A” qualifier, Saturday at 10 am.

The B qualifier will be decided in the 3 pm Saturday draw, with the loser of the A qualifier taking on the winner of a 10 am Saturday game between Clarey, and Rod MacDonald and his Silver Fox Curling & Yacht Club/Charlottetown Curling Complex team. Clarey beat Montague’s George Koke 9-4, while MacDonald came from behind to score six points in ends seven through nine, and  beat Jamie Jackson 8-5 this evening to advance to tomorrow morning’s match.

The final two participants in the championship round will be decided at 10 am on Sunday, with the winner of a 3 pm Saturday game between Koke and Jackson taking on the loser of Qualifier #2 in the third qualifier game, and the winner of a game between Montague’s Larry Richards and Charlottetown’s Kevin Champion at 3 pm Saturday taking on the loser of the Clarey/MacDonald game for the final qualifier.

The Page round, with the first two qualifiers squaring off in the Page 1-2 game, with the winner  advancing directly to the 3 pm Monday final, and the loser going to the 10 am Monday semi-final, goes Sunday at 3 pm. The Page 3-4 game with the other two qualifiers goes at the same time, with the winner advancing to the semi-final, and the semi-final winner going to the championship game.

The PEI Mixed winner will advance to the Canadian Mixed, November 14-23 at the Rideau Curling Club in Ottawa.
