Crapaud’s Alan Inman rink repeats as The Dominion Men’s Winners, Alberton’s Sharon Horne rink wins The Dominion Women’s Division

The provincial The Dominion Curling Club Championship wrapped up with today’s 5:30 pm finals at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Sharon Horne and her host club rink of of Kim Ellsworth, Wendy Fraser, and Alison Griffin fought back from a 3-2 deficit after 5 ends with a deuce in the sixth, and stolen singles in the final two ends to defeat 2011 champ Lorianne Davies and her Cornwall Curling Club by a 6-3 score to win the women’s title. Other members of the Davies rink are Morgan Kirkham, Tracy MacDonald, and Lynda Turnbull.

It was a repeat win for the Crapaud Community Curling Club’s Allan Inman rink in the men’s section,  with a close 8-7 victory over Blair Jay and his team from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club in Summerside. Inman was up two with hammer coming home, facing four Jay counters with his final shot, where he played a hit and stick. When the rocks settled, Jay still had shot rock, and a measure was needed to determine who had second shot. It was Inman’s, giving him the one-point victory. Other members of the winning Inman rink are Stephen Thomson, Gordon Fall, and Tony Quigley, while Sandy Rundle, Chuck Jay, and Gerald Caissy round out the runner-up Jay foursome.

The Horne and Inman rinks now advance to the national The Dominion Curling Club Championship, November 18-23, 2013 at the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay Ontario.

Davies scored a triple in an extra end to beat Summerside’s Karen MacDonald rink 7-4 in the afternoon semi-finals. Jay and his team won the men’s semi 8-2 over the Paul Morrison rink from Montague. Davies and Morrison both finished round robin play with 3-2 win-loss records to advance to the semi-final between the second and third place teams.

Inman had a spotless 5-0 round robin record to take first place in the men’s divison, while Horne and Davies both had 4-1 records after round robin play. Since Horne beat Davies, by a 10-4 score, in their round robin encounter, she was awarded first place and a berth in the final. MacDonald finished round robin play with a 2-3 win-loss record, tied with Charlottetown’s Carol Kennedy, and Montague’s Tracy Yorston-Campbell, requiring tiebreakers to determine the final berth in the women’s semi. Kennedy beat Yorston-Campbell 7-1 in the first tiebreaker, while MacDonald doubled Kennedy 6-3 in the second one.

The other rinks in the Men’s division were the Alan Brown team from Charlottetown and the Mike Trudeau foursome from Western, who both finished at 2-3, and the Paul Neima team from Cornwall, who did not pick up a win in five starts. Crapaud’s Vanessa Hamming, who finished at 1-4, rounded out the women’s field.
